Analysts say gains in financial shares could be sustained ahead of the signing of a long-waited financial supervision agreement between Taiwan and China by mid-year. The main TAIEX share index <.TWII> closed up 55.85 points at 5,529.63, its strongest finish since Oct. 3. Turnover rose to a 10-month high of T$162 billion ($4.9 billion) from Thursday's T$148.2 billion. "The G20 injection plan is a big confidence boost to world markets," said John Chiu, a vice president of Fuh Hwa Securities Investment Trust. "Economic data from the United States and in Taiwan showed their economies are bottoming out. And with a memorandum of understanding expected to be signed in the next few months, the market has good chance to rise further." The financial sub-index <.TFNI> jumped 4 percent. Cathay Financial, the island's biggest listed financial holding company and the day's most active by turnover, climbed 5.45 percent. Shin Kong Financial <2888.tw>, parent of Taiwan's third-largest insurer, jumped 3.2 percent ahead of an auction of its prime property later in the day in Taipei to raise capital for its struggling life insurance arm. A stronger Taiwan dollar , which has gained more than 4 percent since the end of February, has helped trigger more foreign fund inflows over the past weeks. Foreign institutions bought a net T$12.1 billion worth of local shares on Thursday, their largest one-day stock buying in 10-½ months. However, market gains could be capped as local firms are set to announce monthly sales numbers by April 10 and as some investors locked in profits from the TAIEX's recent rallies. Nanya Tech <2408.tw>, Taiwan's No.2 DRAM maker, fell 0.25 percent after U.S. chipmaker Micron Technology Inc , Nanya's technology partner, posted a wider-than-expected quarterly loss. [ID:nN02373317] Nanya's smaller rival ProMOS <5387.two> ended flat, giving up a strong rise in early session after saying settlement of its tender offer for a convertible bond would be delayed. [nTP196156] HOT STOCKS -- Acer Inc <2353.tw>, the world's No.3 PC brand, fell 1.44 percent. Minutes before the closing bell, Acer said it expected its performance to be better this quarter than the previous one, and was starting to see a longer wait for certain components. [nTP27088] -- The automobile sub-index <.TAUI> rose 3.8 percent on continued boosts from China's auto programme. A local newspaper said the Chinese government will give out more than $5 billion yuan ($732 million) in subsidies for cars purchased in rural areas in the second quarter, likely stimulating demand of 1 million more automobiles. --------------------TAIEX IN PERSPECTIVE-------------------- Move on day 1.02 percent Close on day 5,529.63 2009 intraday high 5,567.15 2009 intraday low 4,164.19 All time high 12,682.41 12 FEB 1990 ------------------------------------------------------------ For a table of foreign trading in Taiwan stocks, double-click on [ID:nTP170358] (US$1=T$33.4) (Editing by Muralikumar Anantharaman) ((gina.chang@thomsonreuters.com; +886 2 2508-0815; Reuters Messaging:gina.chang.thomsonreuters.com@reuters.com)) ((If you have a query or comment on this story, send an email to news.feedback.asia@thomsonreuters.com)) ASIA-PACIFIC STOCK MARKETS: Pan-Asia......[STXNEWS/AS] Japan........[.T] S.Korea....[.KS] S.E.
