14:29 31Jul09 RTRS-Taiwan stocks post 6th weekly gain, TSMC jumps * Main index posts sixth straight weekly gain * TSMC jumps after strong Q2 earnings and upbeat Q3 outlook * ASE limit up before posting Q2 result (Updates indexes, quotes and details) By Joan Hsu TAIPEI, July 31 (Reuters) - Taiwan stocks ended 0.72 percent higher on Friday, with the world's top contract chipmaker, TSMC <2330.tw>, leading gains after the company posted better-than-expected quarterly earnings and gave an upbeat outlook. The main TAIEX share index <.TWII> rose 50.60 points to 7,077.71, closing the week with a 1.5 percent gain and marking its sixth straight weekly rise. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing (TSMC) surged 5.18 percent, helping to push the semiconductor sub-index <.TSII> to a 2.38 percent gain. "Solid results from technology companies in Taiwan gave investors reasons to believe that a slow but firm recovery in the global economy is around the corner," said Kevin Yang, president at Paradigm Asset Management. TSMC posted on Thursday a net profit of T$24.44 billion ($743 million) in April-June, its biggest profit in three quarters. [ID:nTP261512] TSMC's second-quarter results saw a sharp rebound as demand for semiconductors across all applications increased. The company expected its sale and profit margins to rise in the third quarter sequentially. [ID:nTP261512] "But the surge we see in shares of TSMC and UMC could just be a flash in the pan, I think some investors still have doubts on the health of the global economy," Yang said. Investors would stay cautious next week because major U.S. indicators such as ISM are coming out early next week, said Kevin Chung, an analyst at Jih Sun Investment Consulting Co, adding the index could pull back next week. The TAIEX index had outperformed most Asian markets, ranking the world's third-best performer among the 30 global indexes tracked by Reuters by a 54 percent rally. Advanced Semiconductor Engineering Group <2311.tw> shot up by its 7 percent daily limit. Minutes after the market close, the world's top chip packaging and testing firm posted a quarterly profit that topped market expectations. Chi Mei Optoelectronics Corp <3009.tw>, Taiwan's second-largest LCD maker, fell 1.6 percent after the company reported a quarterly loss but gave upbeat guidance for the third quarter. 14:24 30Jul09 RTRS-REFILE-Taiwan stocks fall on China worries, TSMC falls (Refiles to fix typo in headline) * Main index tracks losses on China stocks * TSMC falls before Q2 result * UMC rises on better-than-expected Q2 earnings * Market seen gaining support at 6,900 pts (Updates quotes, hot stocks; Adds details) TAIPEI, July 30 (Reuters) - Taiwan stocks ended 0.8 percent lower on Thursday, their second straight daily slide, as concerns about a sustained recovery in China and the United States weighed on export-reliant shares such as TSMC <2330.tw>. The main TAIEX share index <.TWII> closed 56.52 points lower at 7,027.11, staging a 1.6 percent drop over two sessions. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co (TSMC) , the world's top contract chip maker, dipped 0.88 percent, pushing the semiconductor sub-index <.TSII> 0.8 percent lower. Turnover was less active, at T$146 billion ($4.4 billion) from Wednesday's T$162 billion. "The falls in the U.S. and China stock markets were like pouring a bucket of cold water on fire for the Taiwan market," said Andrew Deng, an assistant vice president at Taiwan International Securities Corp. "A slowdown in China's economic recovery could be hurtful because Taiwan relies on China for its exports," he said, predicting that the TAIEX will gain support at 6,900 points into next week. Taiwan stocks had gained 53 percent since the beginning of 2009, making it the world's third-best performer, in part due to investor optimism that Taiwan's warming ties with China would help boost the island's economy. The Shanghai Composite Index <.SSEC> sank 5 percent on Wednesday to post its biggest daily decline in eight months, as investors sold stocks on worries that major Chinese banks may start to restrict lending to cool select booming markets. [ID:nLT420593]. It was flat in afternoon trade on Thursday. Wall Street also fell overnight on worries that China's tighter lending would curb demand and hinder a global economic recovery. [.N] After the market closed, TSMC posted a better-than-expected profit of T$24.44 billion in the April-June quarter, raising further hopes the worst may be over for the tech sector. [ID:nTPU001540] Unitd Microelectronics Corp <2303.tw> , smaller rival of TSMC, ended 1.08 percent higher. The world's No.2 contract chip maker swung to a second-quarter profit and gave a robust outlook, underlining signs of a recovery in the chip foundry sector. [ID:nTP182537] Chi Mei Optoelectronics <3009.tw> dipped 0.27 percent. After the market close, the company posted a net loss of T$8.84 billion in the second quarter, less than market expectations. --------------------TAIEX IN PERSPECTIVE-------------------- Move on day -0.8 percent Close on day 7,027.11 2009 intraday high 7,142.63 2009 intraday low 4,164.19 All-time high 12,682.41 12 FEB 1990 ------------------------------------------------------------ For a table of foreign trading in Taiwan stocks, double-click on [ID:nTP170358] (Reporting by Joan Hsu; Editing by Ken Wills) ((If you have a query or comment on this story, send an email to news.feedback.asia@thomsonreuters.com)) ASIA-PACIFIC STOCK MARKETS: Pan-Asia......[STXNEWS/AS] Japan........[.T] S.Korea....[.KS] S.E. 17:04 29Jul09 RTRS-Taiwan dollar weakens on funds, exporters support * Taiwan dollar weakens on foreign fund outflows * Investors avoid risk ahead of U.S. GDP on Friday * Trade seen mainly between T$32.8 and T$33.0 for the week * Offshore NDFs narrow (Adds details, quotes) TAIPEI, July 29 (Reuters) - The Taiwan dollar fell on Wednesday, retreating from a 1-½ month closing high in the previous session, due to foreign fund outflows as local stocks fell, but exporters capped the losses. The Taiwan dollar had firmed on Monday and Tuesday, ending at its strongest level since June 10. "Local stocks and other markets in Asia staged a pull-back after the recent rally," said a dealer in Taipei. "Investor risk appetites also waned as they anxiously await GDP (gross domestic product) data from the U.S. on Friday." Taiwan stocks <.TWII> fell 0.83 percent as investors locked in profits in major technology shares after their recent rally. Investors often sell off Asian currencies to avoid risk as the region's export-reliant economies trade heavily with the United States. "The central bank also bought U.S. dollars during the session, further pressuring the local currency," said the dealer. However, U.S. dollar selling by exporters helped contain the decline. Exporters took advantage of the weak currency to change into more Taiwan dollars to meet cash needs at home. Dealers said they expected the Taiwan dollar to remain rangebound on Thursday and Friday, trading mainly between T$32.8 and T$33.0. In the non-deliverable forwards (NDFs) market, six-month NDFs narrowed, indicating that the market is expecting the Taiwan dollar to strengthen less than earlier predictions. 0800 GMT PREVIOUS SESSION T$ (Taipei Forex Inc) 32.871 32.743 Volume in $ mln (Taipei Forex Inc) 1,228 1,021 T$ (Cosmos) 32.840 32.725 Six-month NDFs -0.460/-0.440 -0.570/-0.550 Note: Taipei Forex Inc is Taiwan's main forex exchange; Cosmos is a smaller exchange. 14:29 29Jul09 RTRS-Taiwan stocks post worst drop in 2 wks, UMC falls * UMC leads tech lower as investors take profits * China Steel up 3.6 pct on plan to raise product prices * LCD shares rise on report of possible investment in China * Main index seen trading at 7,000-7,250 pts this wk (Adds quotes, details; Updates hot stocks) By Joan Hsu TAIPEI, July 29 (Reuters) - Taiwan stocks ended 0.83 percent lower on Wednesday, their biggest daily slide since July 13, with investors locking in profits in UMC <2303.tw> and other major technology shares. The main TAIEX share index <.TWII> was down 59 points at 7,083.63, retreating from an 11-month closing high on Tuesday. Turnover was slightly more active at T$162 billion ($4.9 billion), compared with T$154 billion in the previous session. United Microelectronics Corp (UMC) , the world's No.2 contract chip maker, lost 1.07 percent, pushing the semiconductor sub-index <.TSII> 0.98 percent lower. After the market closed, UMC posted a better-than-expected quarterly profit of T$1.547 billion. [ID:nTPU001538] Shares of UMC had staged a near 11 percent rally in the prior five sessions on optimism it could have returned to the black in the second quarter, beating the broader market's 3 percent rise over the period. "There was a broad selloff in heavyweights such as UMC and HTC <2498.tw>, as investors anticipated a pullback following their recent gains," said Katty Wang, a fund manager at Prudential Financial Securities Investment Trust. "But I don't think the main index will pull back that much because corporate fundamentals are quite positive, which have been reflected in the results disclosed by some U.S. companies," Wang said. The main index is expected to trade between 7,000-7,250 points for the rest of this week on thin turnover, some analysts said. UMC's larger rival, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co Ltd <2330.tw> , fell 2.42 percent, one day before it releases second-quarter results. Smartphone maker HTC Corp <2498.tw> plunged 6.31 percent after some analysts downgraded its stock on concern over the poor outlook for the second half of the year. But one bright spot was China Steel <2002.tw>, the island's top steel maker, which jumped 3.58 percent. The company said it plans to raise its domestic product prices by 9.4 percent in September, the biggest increase in a year, as demand picks up on signs of a recovery in the global economy. [ID:nTP193607] LCD shares were mixed, with AU Optronics <2409.tw> , the world's No. 3 flat-panel maker, rising 0.54 percent. But its smaller cross-town rival, Chi Mei Optronics <3009.tw>, slipped 0.8 percent. The shares moved after a newspaper reported on Wednesday that Taiwan will allow local flat panel and seminconductor makers to make investments in China using their advanced process technologies. 14:36 28Jul09 RTRS-Taiwan stocks close at 11-mth high; Hon Hai surges * Buoyant U.S., Taiwan data boosts exporters like Hon Hai * UMC up ahead of Q2 earnings on Wednesday * China Steel rises after price increases * Analysts say index due for correction (Updates indexes, quotes, details) TAIPEI, July 28 (Reuters) - Taiwan stocks ended up 1.62 percent on Tuesday, their best single day percentage rise in two weeks, as positive domestic and U.S. economic data fuelled buying of export-reliant shares such as Hon Hai <2317.tw>. The main TAIEX share index <.TWII> finished up 114.20 points at 7,142.63, its strongest close since August 15 last year. Turnover was active at T$154 billion ($4.7 billion) compared with Monday's T$112 billion, as a upbeat economic data and hopes for more solid earnings boosted investor sentiment. "Taiwan's stocks have finally caught up after lagging in the recent two-week run-up seen in the United States and other markets around the globe," said Alex Huang, a research director at Mega International Securities Co. "Upbeat economic data from both Taiwan and the United States also helped the stock market." Electronics giant Hon Hai led gains, surging 4.59 percent as bargain hunters scooped up the company's shares after it fell for five straight sessions. United Microelectronics Corp (UMC) , the world's second-largest contract chipmaker, also rose, climbing 1.82 percent on the prospect of better second-quarter earnings and on an improved outlook for the semiconductor industry. United Microelectronics Corp and its larger rival Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co Ltd <2330.tw> are scheduled to report their quarterly results on Wednesday and Thursday, respectively. Sentiment was also boosted by Taiwan's index of leading indicators gaining 1.8 percent in June, its fifth straight rise and a further sign that the export-led economy was recovering from recession. [ID:nTP114415] Surging home sales in the United States helped boost the construction sub-index <.TCOI>, which closed the session up 2.77 percent. Top gainers included real estate developer Hung Ching <2527.tw>, which surged by its daily 7 percent limit. Other gainers included China Steel <2002.tw>, Taiwan's top steel maker, which climbed 3.53 percent and was the market's third most active share by volume. Shares of China Steel jumped after the company said on Tuesday it would raise its domestic product prices by about 9 percent in September from July and August as demand picks up. [ID:nTPU001533] Taiwan stocks have risen more than 57 percent since the beginning of the year, and analysts warned that the index could be due for a correction soon. "We are still not seeing the volume that's necessary to push the index even higher, because I think some investors are waiting for more clues," said Mega Securities' Huang, who expects the index to trade between 7,010 and 7,200 points this week. HOT STOCKS -- Compal Electronics <2324.tw>, the world's No.2 contract laptop PC maker, rose 3.24 percent after a local newspaper reported the company had won a bid to make 20 million notebook PCs for Acer Inc <2353.tw> next year. The main TAIEX share index <.TWII> closed up 55.15 points at 7,028.43, finishing at its highest level since Aug. 29, 2008. Shares worth T$112.3 billion ($3.4 billion) changed hands, easing from T$149 billion on Friday. United Microelectronics Corp, the world's No.2 contract chip maker, soared 6.18 percent, outperforming the electronics sub-index's <.TELI> 0.92 percent gain. "Investors were bullish about UMC's outlook in the second half of this year," said Andrew Deng, an assistant vice president at Taiwan International Securities. UMC could have returned to the black in the second quarter thanks to growing demand, while bigger rival TSMC <2330.tw> probably made its largest profit in three quarters. (For preview of UMC's and TSMC's earnings, please double-click [ID:nTP35599]) Shares of TSMC ended up 0.7 percent. UMC and TSMC are scheduled to announce their quarterly earnings and give guidance on Wednesday and Thursday, respectively. Despite the gains, the broader market is expected to pull back because Taiwan stocks had risen more than 50 percent since the begining of this year, some analysts said. "My bet is that until there is a significant gain in U.S. stocks or optimistic outlook coming from major companies, the main index would trade at between 6,800 and 7,100 in the short term," said Tom Tang, a vice president of Masterlink Investment Advisory. Powerchip Semiconductor <5346.two> and ProMOS <5387.two>, Taiwan's No.1 and No.3 DRAM makers, both shot up by almost the 7 percent daily limit. The electronics sub-index <.TELI> jumped 0.92 percent. "Shares in DRAM companies rose today as a result of an increase in product price, but I'm not sure whether their stock momentum will be sustained as demand for DRAMs continues to be weak and competition still fierce," Tang said. --------------------TAIEX IN PERSPECTIVE-------------------- Move on day 0.79 percent Close on day 7,028.43 2009 intraday high 7,084.83 2009 intraday low 4,164.19 All-time high 12,682.41 12 FEB 1990 ------------------------------------------------------------- For a table of foreign trading in Taiwan stocks, double-click on [ID:nTP170358] ((Reporting by Joan Hsu; Editing by Neil Fullick)) ((If you have a query or comment on this story, send an email to news.feedback.asia@thomsonreuters.com)) ASIA-PACIFIC STOCK MARKETS: Pan-Asia......[STXNEWS/AS] Japan........[.T] S.Korea....[.KS] S.E. 14:37 24Jul09 RTRS-Taiwan stocks end slightly lower, AU weighs * AU drags the big board lower as investors book profits * June export orders and some laptop PC shares buck trend * TSMC and UMC mixed before quarterly results next week * Index seen trading between 6,800 and 7,200 points next week (Updates indexes, quotes and details) TAIPEI, July 24 (Reuters) - Taiwan stocks ended 0.11 percent lower on Friday, as AU Optronics <2409.tw> fell after investors booked recent profits, but some laptop PC shares defied the fall after a smaller-than-expected fall in June export orders. The main TAIEX share index <.TWII> finished 7.6 points lower at 6,973.28, barely extending its loss in the previous session. The index has risen more than 50 percent since the beginning of this year and is one of the best performers amongst the 30 global indexes tracked by Reuters. The electronics sub-index <.TELI> rose 0.08 percent, largely helped by laptop PC shares, but its gains were offset by weakness in heavyweights such as Hon Hai <2317.tw> and AU Optronics as investors locked in recent profits. "A smaller fall in export orders indicates a pick-up in consumer demand, and the data supported the export-reliant tech shares," said Andrew Deng, an assistant vice president at Taiwan International Securities Corp. "But people always sell around 7,000 because it's near the year's high mark." Electronics parts giant Hon Hai fell 1.35 percent, while AU Optronics, the world's third-largest LCD maker, dropped 3.80 percent. AU Optronics started off strong early in the session after the company posted a narrower second-quarter loss, but later surrendered gains as investors locked in profits. "I think investors are doubtful about the company's fourth-quarter outlook because there is a possibility that a mounting panel price may offset consumer demand." said Deng. AU Optronics projected on Thursday a strong third-quarter outlook as demand for flat-screen TVs shot up in key markets such as China, where a massive government stimulus plan has helped in domestic spending. [ID:nTP188009] Sector leader Samsung Electronics <005930.ks> said on Friday its LCD business posted a 3 percent profit margin in April-June against a 8 percent loss margin in the first quarter. [ID:nSEL000710] The optoelectronics sub-index <.TOPI> fell 1.54 percent but the sub-index had gained 91 percent since the beginning of January. The LCD sector has been one of the few bright spots in the broader technology sector amid a global economic recession, as growing demand in markets such as the United States and China, and a tight supply in raw materials, kept panel prices high. The computer and peripheral equipment sub-index <.TCPI> rose 1.72 percent as Quanta <2382.tw>, the world's biggest contract lap PC maker, surged 5.62 percent on hopes of better sales and shipments in the third quarter. Deng said Microsoft's sales drop cast a shadow of doubt over the sales of laptop PCs. Netbook pioneer Asustek <2357.tw> fell 1.21 percent, but Acer <2353.tw> rose 1.93 percent. Analysts expect the exchange's turnover to grow next week, after more technology companies, such as world's top contract chipmakers TSMC <2330.tw> and UMC <2303.tw>, release their quarterly earnings and provide investors with a clearer outlook. The main index is seen trading between 6,800 and 7,200 points next week. --------------------TAIEX IN PERSPECTIVE-------------------- Move on day -0.11 percent Close on day 6,973.28 2009 intraday high 7,084.83 2009 intraday low 4,164.19 All-time high 12,682.41 12 FEB 1990 ------------------------------------------------------------[ For a table of foreign trading in Taiwan stocks, double-click on [ID:nTP170358] (Reporting by Joan Hsu; Editing by Valerie Lee) ((gina.chang@thomsonreuters.com; +886 2 2508-0815; Reuters Messaging: gina.chang.reuters.com@reuters.net)) ((If you have a query or comment on this story, send an email to news.feedback.asia@thomsonreuters.com)) ASIA-PACIFIC STOCK MARKETS: Pan-Asia......[STXNEWS/AS] Japan........[.T] S.Korea....[.KS] S.E. 17:15 23Jul09 RTRS-Taiwan dlr gains on risk appetite, c.bank caps gains * Risk appetite grows after strong U.S. corporate earnings * Central bank buys U.S. dollars to curb local currency gains * Taiwan dlr range seen between T$32.8 and T$33.0 on Friday (Updates to close) TAIPEI, July 23 (Reuters) - The Taiwan dollar rose on Thursday as investor risk appetite grew following strong U.S. corporate earnings, tracking the momentum of other Asian currencies, but the island's central bank curbed gains. The Taiwan dollar , which has been trending higher over the past two weeks, started off weak early in the session on Thursday but strengthened later. "The Taiwan dollar rose as investors' risk appetite increased on robust U.S. home prices and as it took cues from the rising South Korean won," said a dealer in Taipei. In global markets, the U.S. dollar hovered near a seven-week low against key currencies as home prices and steady domestic stock markets offset weak bank earnings. [ID:nT122018] But the central bank bought U.S. dollars throughout the session to keep the currency from firming too much, dealers said. The authority keeps the Taiwan dollar in a managed float but recently has pushed it lower to help the island's recession-strapped exporters. The Taiwan dollar has gained more than 1 percent since mid-July as improvement in U.S. earnings has boosted market sentiment in emerging Asia, where many economies rely on exports to key markets such as the United States. Exporters took advantage of the weaker dollar earlier in the session to convert forex holdings into more Taiwan dollars. Dealers expect the Taiwan dollar to trade mainly between T$32.8 and T$33.0 on Friday. 0800 GMT PREVIOUS DAY T$ (Taipei Forex Inc) 32.802 32.875 Volume in $ mln (Taipei Forex Inc) 602 604 T$(Cosmos) 32.797 32.870 Six-month NDFs -0.500/-0.450 -0.500/-0.460 Note: Taipei Forex Inc is Taiwan's main forex exchange; Cosmos is a smaller exchange. 14:44 23Jul09 RTRS-Taiwan stocks end slightly lower, but TSMC, AU up * Market snaps 7-day winning streak * AU jumps ahead of quarterly earnings * Notebook PC shares rise before Microsoft releases codes * Shin Kong advances after GDR sale (Updates indexes, quotes and details) By Joan Hsu TAIPEI, July 23 (Reuters) - Taiwan stocks edged down 0.06 percent on Thursday as investors booked profits in major banking shares, but the slide was capped by gains in technology heavyweights such as TSMC <2330.tw> and AU <2409.tw>. The main TAIEX share index <.TWII> finished 4.44 points lower at 6,980.88, snapping a seven-day winning streak and off a nearly 11-month closing high in the previous session. Turnover shrank to T$128 billion ($3.9 billion) from Wednesday's T$145 billion. AU Optronics <2409.tw> , the world's No.3 flat-panel maker, closed 0.39 percent higher before it posted a smaller-than-expected loss in the second quarter. [ID:nTPU001521] TSMC, the world's top contract chip maker, jumped 2.17 percent, pushing the broader electronics sub-index <.TELI> 0.17 percent higher. The gained comes after its ADRs shot up 4.56 percent in New York trading overnight. But Cathay Financial <2882.tw>, the island's top listed financial holding firm, fell 0.97 percent, dragging the banking and insurance sub-index <.TFNI> down 0.82 percent. "Taiwan stocks are slowly running out of steam as some investors stayed sidelined following a strong run-up recently," said Tu Jin-lung of Grand Cathay Securities. The TAIEX index had gained more than 6 percent since July 13, when it posted its worst single day drop in three months. The financial sub-index <.TFNI> rose 8 percent during the same period. Notebook PC makers rose, with Acer <2353.tw> and Asustek Computer <2357.tw>, up 0.6 percent and 3.88 percent, respectively. PC shares got a boost after Microsoft Corp said it would release codes for Windows 7 to manufacturers so they can start loading up new PCs, laptops and netbooks with the operating system. [ID:nN21259435] Analysts expected the main index to consolidate between 6,900 and 7,084 points on Friday, with technology shares lending support to the main board. Shin Kong Financial <2888.tw>, parent of Taiwan's No. 3 insurer, gained 4.23 percent after the company raised T$12.3 billion ($375 million) from an overseas stock sale. 14:41 22Jul09 RTRS-Taiwan stocks hit 11-mth closing high on banks * Taiwan stocks buoyed by upbeat U.S. earnings, banks * AU, TSMC, UMC fall ahead of quarterly earnings reports * DRAM shares mixed after gov't funding plan * Index seen trading between 6,600-7,100 points (Updates quotes, details and indexes) TAIPEI, July 22 (Reuters) - Taiwan stocks rose 0.46 percent on Wednesday to hit a near 11-month closing high as positive U.S. corporate earnings boosted sentiment, with gains fueled by banking shares such as Fubon <2881.tw> on warming China ties. Technology shares also gained after Apple Inc reported stronger than expected quarterly earnings, sending Hon Hai <2317.tw> and other suppliers higher. The main TAIEX share index <.TWII> rose above 7,000 by midday before losing some gains to end up 31.98 points at 6,985.32, a closing high not seen since August 29, 2008. Turnover amounted to T$145 billion ($4.42 billion), less than Tuesday's T$151 billion. Taiwan stocks had risen over 50 percent so far this year on signs of a global economic recovery, making it one of the best performers among the 30 global indexes tracked by Reuters. "Banking shares rose as a result of reviving hope on warming trade ties with China, but the gains have waned since the shares have priced in their positives," said Kevin Chung, an analyst at Jih Sun Investment Consulting Co. The banking and insurance sub-index <.TFNI> outperformed the big board to gain 0.58 percent. Fubon Financial Holding climbed 3.73 percent after a local newspaper reported that three Chinese banks would soon set up representative offices in Taiwan, reviving hopes for stronger economic ties. "The TAIEX index is under massive pressure as it approaches its 2009 high," Chung said. "And it's going to linger within a range of 6,600 and 7,100, until major technology companies provide clearer signs with their quarterly earnings next week." AU Optronics <2409.tw> , the world's No.3 flat-panel maker, dropped 2.19 percent ahead of its quarterly earnings report on Thursday. The broader electronics sub-index <.TELI> gained 0.45 percent after a strong earnings report from Apple Inc. Hon Hai Precision Industry, a major electronic parts supplier to Apple, jumped 2.25 percent on expectation of new orders. TSMC <2330.tw> and UMC <2303.tw> , the world's top two contract chip makers, dropped 0.36 percent and 1.17 percent, respectively, before they report second-quarter earnings next week. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co Ltd (TSMC) probably made its largest profit in three quarters in the second quarter, while money-losing rival United Microelectronics Corp (UMC) could have returned to profit on growing demand. [ID:nTP35599] Analysts also said Taiwan stocks got a boost after Taiwan's labour pension fund announced plans to ramp up investment in local and overseas stocks by T$73 billion next year on expectations that a global recovery will gather speed. [ID:nTP113621] "I think that an increase in stock purchases by the pension fund points to a expected recovery in Taiwan's economy, which fits well with investor's expectations," added Chung. Shares of DRAM makers were mixed after Taiwan's government announced a plan to inject funds into the sector if manufacturers could map out restructuring proposals that help the whole memory chip sector. [ID:nTP120897] Powerchip <5346.two> and Nanya Tech <2408.tw> gained 0.77 percent and 4.25 percent, respectively, while Taiwan's No.3 DRAM chipmaker ProMOS <5387.two> dropped 1.72 percent. The DRAM sector is grappling with its worst-ever downturn on oversupply and falling demand. --------------------TAIEX IN PERSPECTIVE-------------------- Move on day 0.46 percent Close on day 6,985.32 2009 intraday high 7,084.83 2009 intraday low 4,164.19 All-time high 12,682.41 12 FEB 1990 ------------------------------------------------------------ For a table of foreign trading in Taiwan stocks, double-click on [ID:nTP170358] (Reporting by Joan Hsu; Editing by Jonathan Hopfner) ((gina.chang@thomsonreuters.com; +886 2 2508-0815; Reuters Messaging: gina.chang.reuters.com@reuters.net)) ((If you have a query or comment on this story, send an email to news.feedback.asia@thomsonreuters.com)) ASIA-PACIFIC STOCK MARKETS: Pan-Asia......[STXNEWS/AS] Japan........[.T] S.Korea....[.KS] S.E. 14:44 21Jul09 RTRS-Taiwan stocks up 0.21 pct, PC and LCD issues help * Notebook PC and LCD makers lead gains in technology shares * TSMC up after TI posts stronger-than-expected Q2 results * Index seen trading between 6,800 and 7,000 points (Adds quotes and details) TAIPEI, July 21 (Reuters) - Taiwan stocks closed up 0.21 percent on Tuesday as PC shares such as Quanta Computer <2382.tw> led gains in technology shares on hopes of new orders, but caution took hold as investors awaited more quarterly earnings. The main TAIEX share index <.TWII> edged up 14.48 points to 6,953.34, its highest finish since June 1. Turnover was modest at T$151 billion ($4.6 billion) but higher than Monday's T$144 billion. "There are two forces pulling on opposite directions, with some investors looking to book profits now, while others are waiting for the index to climb higher," said Kevin Yang, a president at Paradigm Asset Management Co Ltd. "These investors are likely to maintain their wait and see stances until second quarter results provide a clearer outlook." Taiwan's major technology companies, including LCD maker AU Optronics <2409.tw>, are due to report their quarterly earnings later this week. Yang said the TAIEX index would likely trade between 6,800 and 7,000 for the next few sessions. PC-related shares helped the index stay on the positive side, with contract notebook makers Quanta and Compal <2324.tw> gaining 2.29 percent and 3.86 percent, respectively, after a research firm said PC shipments in the Asia Pacific region in the second quarter were better than expected. [ID:nTP45700] The broader computer and peripheral equipment sub-index <.TCPI> gained 0.53 percent, outperforming the broader electronics sub-index <.TELI>, which edged up 0.16 percent. Quanta, the world's biggest contract laptop PC maker, got another boost from a report that it is expected to secure more than 40 percent of Hewlett-Packard's laptop orders next year, supplying about 16 million laptops to the U.S. PC vendor. TSMC <2330.tw> climbed 1.28 percent after client Texas Instruments Inc posted a stronger-than-expected quarterly profit and outlook. [ID:nB86748] Bucking the trend were the world's No. 3 PC brand Acer <2353.tw> and netbook PC pioneer Asustek <2357.tw>, whose shares fell 2.06 percent and 1.04 percent, respectively, after both stocks staged a rally recently. The world's No.3 LCD maker AU Optronics <2409.tw> gained 0.26 percent, while the overall optoelectronics sub-index <.TOPI> went up 0.75 percent. LCD panel prices have climbed in recent months, largely on the back of China's stimulus package to boost domestic spending. HOT STOCKS -- Chinatrust <2891.tw> gained 0.67 percent after it joined U.S. private equity firm Bain Capital in a bid for AIG's Taiwan insurance unit Nan Shan. [ID:nHKG291296] -- China Steel <2002.tw> climbed 0.5 percent after a company sources said the island's top steel maker could resume operations for one of its four blast furnaces in late August to meet increasing demand in steels in United States, China and Taiwan. 14:38 20Jul09 RTRS-Taiwan stocks rise on gains in banks and techs * Technology shares rise on better earnings prospects * AU Optronics up ahead of Q2 earnings on Thursday * TAIEX seen trading between 6,800-7,084 this week (Adds closing price, quotes) TAIPEI, July 20 (Reuters) - Taiwan stocks rose 1.28 percent on Monday to a fresh over one-month closing high as upbeat earnings from U.S. firms boosted tech exporters, while banking shares gained on hopes of a financial agreement with China. The main TAIEX shares index <.TWII> ended up 87.87 points at 6,938.86, its highest close since June 2. Turnover was light, with T$143 billion ($4.3 billion) worth of shares changing hands, as sentiment turned cautious before major technology firms in Taiwan report quarterly earnings later this week. The banking and insurance sub-index <.TFNI> outperformed the main board to gain 2.28 percent, with Cathay Financial Holding <2882.tw> rising 1.36 percent. Banking shares climbed after a newspaper reported that top leaders from Taiwan and China would soon meet to discuss the signing of a FTA-like financial pact known as a Economic Cooperation Framework Agreement (ECFA), deemed by many as crucial for Taiwan's economic competitiveness. "Banking shares and electronics shares are taking turns to rise, with banking shares in the lead today as officials from Taiwan and China will exchange opinions about the ECFA soon," said Tu Jin-lung, an analyst at Grand Cathay Securities who expects the index to trade between 6,800-7,084 this week. Electronics shares continued to thrive after strong earnings from technology giants such as IBM and Intel Corp . "Despite gains in China-related issues, investors are chasing electronics shares as they bet on better earnings in the third quarter as peak season approaches," said Tu. The electronics sub-index <.TELI> gained 0.91 percent, with chip heavyweight Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co Ltd <2330.tw> rising 1.48 percent and its smaller rival UMC <2303.tw> gaining 1.21 percent. TSMC and UMC, the world's top two contract chip makers, are due to report their second-quarter earnings next week. LCD maker AU Optronics <2409.tw> rose 1.57 percent ahead of its second-quarter earnings on Thursday, outperforming a 0.77 percent rise on the broader optoelectronics sub-index <.TOPI>. LCD shares have been faring well amid the global economic recession, as consumers replace their bulky TV sets with new, flat-panel models that have boosted demand for panels across key markets such as the United States and China. Tourism shares were also in the spotlight after a local newspaper reported that Taiwan and China were likely to set up tourism representative offices between each other at the end of this year. The tourism sub-index <.THOI> rose 1.53 percent, as hotelier Formosa Hotel <2707.tw>> gained 1.94 percent on expectations of more Chinese tourists. --------------------TAIEX IN PERSPECTIVE-------------------- Move on day 1.28 percent Close on day 6,938.86 2009 intraday high 7,084.83 2009 intraday low 4,164.19 All-time high 12,682.41 12 FEB 1990 ------------------------------------------------------------ For a table of foreign trading in Taiwan stocks, double-click on [ID:nTP170358] (Reporting by Joan Hsu; Editing by Jonathan Hopfner) ((gina.chang@thomsonreuters.com; +886 2 2508-0815; Reuters Messaging: gina.chang.reuters.com@reuters.net)) ((If you have a query or comment on this story, send an email to news.feedback.asia@thomsonreuters.com)) ASIA-PACIFIC STOCK MARKETS: Pan-Asia......[STXNEWS/AS] Japan........[.T] S.Korea....[.KS] S.E. 14:31 16Jul09 RTRS-Positive PC data push Taiwan stocks to 1-mth high * Techs gain on positive PC data from the United States * Banking shares cede early gains as investors book profits * Analysts expect the index to trade between 6,700-6,900 (Adds closing prices, details, quotes) TAIPEI, July 16 (Reuters) - Taiwan stocks rose 0.62 percent on Thursday to its highest level in more than one month, as strong corporate earnings and improving economic data in the United States fuelled technology shares such as Acer <2353.tw>. The main TAIEX share index <.TWII> closed up 41.70 points at 6,780.30, its highest close since June 6. Turnover was active at T$150 billion ($4.5 billion), its highest since June 9, as signs of a global economic recovery boosted investor sentiment. "PC-related shares were the top gainers, with positive economic data from the U.S. and China signalling a possible revival in consumer buying, which is very positive for local technology companies," said Kevin Chung, an analyst at Jih Sun Investment Consulting Co. Technology shares will continue to be in the spotlight for the next few sessions, as investors brace for more earnings results from major U.S. corporations. "But investors should look out for a correction in the near future, given the sub-index's recent rally," said Chung, who expects the stock index to remain range-bound before the end of this week, trading mainly between 6,700 and 6,900. The electronics sub-index <.TELI> has gained about 56 percent since the start of the year, outpacing a 48 percent rise on the main board. Acer, the world's No.3 PC brand, surged 6 percent after strong U.S. earnings and a report on better-than-expected global PC shipments in the second quarter.[ID:nN15184031] PC-related shares in Taiwan also jumped on expectations the worst was over for the battered technology sector, with Quanta <2382.tw>, the world's largest contract manufacturer of laptop PCs, rising to its 7 percent limit. [ID:nTP216141] The upbeat performance of PC makers pushed the broader computer and peripheral equipment sub-index <.TCPI> up 3.09 percent, making it the session's top advancer. The banking and insurance sub-index <.TFNI> rose 0.87 percent, giving up early gains as investors booked profits after it gained 2.28 percent in the previous session on upbeat earnings from Goldman Sachs . China Airlines <2610.tw> meanwhile rose as much as 2.3 percent, outperforming the broad market, after the company said it expected to break even this year following consecutive quarterly losses. But the stock erased gains to end 0.6 percent lower as analysts said high oil prices and fewer-than-expected Chinese tourists could put pressure on the company's results. --------------------TAIEX IN PERSPECTIVE-------------------- Move on day 0.62 percent Close on day 6,780.30 2009 intraday high 7,084.83 2009 intraday low 4,164.19 All-time high 12,682.41 12 FEB 1990 ------------------------------------------------------------ (Reporting by Joan Hsu; Editing by Dhara Ranasinghe) ((If you have a query or comment on this story, send an email to news.feedback.asia@thomsonreuters.com)) ASIA-PACIFIC STOCK MARKETS: Pan-Asia......[STXNEWS/AS] Japan........[.T] S.Korea....[.KS] S.E. 14:48 15Jul09 RTRS-Taiwan stocks end up on U.S. earnings, TSMC gains * TSMC, Acer climb on strong Intel earnings * Financials up on strong Goldman Sachs performance * Analysts expect little movement for the rest of the week (Updates to close, adds details) TAIPEI, July 15 - Taiwan stocks rose 1.49 percent on Wednesday after a slew of strong earnings in the United States, with top contract chipmaker TSMC <2330.tw> leading gains on an optimistic outlook by chip giant Intel . The main TAIEX share index <.TWII> ended up 99.19 points at 6,738.60, its best daily gain since July 1. The index has gained more than 50 percent from a trough in March amid hopes for a fairly quick and decisive recovery in the global economy, making it the second best performing stock market so far this year among 30 tracked by Thomson Reuters. Turnover was active at just under T$140 billion ($4.2 billion), higher than Tuesday's T$97 billion, but some investors continued to stay away as they braced for more corporate results later in the week. "The (Intel) news was taken as a positive signal that the memory chip industry is about to recover," said Bevan Yeh, senior fund manager at Prudential Financial Securities Investment Trust. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Ltd Co jumped 2.1 percent, outperforming the broader electronics sub-index <.TELI>, which rose 0.8 percent. Intel and investment bank Goldman Sachs both reported better-than-expected results on Tuesday, helping to improve sentiment in global stock markets. [ID:nN14260734] [ID:nN14289399] Other Taiwan technology plays also gained, with the world's No.3 PC brand Acer <2353.tw> jumping 3.83 percent on strong growth in Intel's Atom chip, which powers Acer's highly successful low-cost netbook PC line. The broader computer and peripherals sub-index <.TCPI> was up 1.9 percent. This was in line with similar climbs in other technology stocks in South Korea and Japan, which also rallied after Intel said electronics demand was holding up in Asia. [ID:nSEO127171] Taiwan financials rose after Goldman's solid results, and on continued hopes that an upcoming agreement with China to open up their respective financial services sectors would be good for business. Top listed financial holding company Cathay Financial <2882.tw> rose 2.89 percent, outperforming the broader banking and insurance sub-index <.TFNI>, which advanced 2.28 percent. "Strong results from Goldman Sachs helped banking shares back onto their feet, offsetting worries over the delay of a China pact that many consider vital to Taiwan's economy," said Prudential's Yeh. Analysts said they believe most of the week's gains have already been priced into the market, and they expect the stock index to remain rangebound for the next few days. "I'm looking at a range of 6,500 to 6,800 this week," said Tom Tang, vice president at Masterlink Advisory. "I don't think it'll be easy for the index to go past 6,800 because of the light volume." ------------------------TAIEX IN PERSPECTIVE-------------------- Move on day 1.49 percent Close on day 6,738.60 2009 intraday high 7,084.83 2009 intraday low 4,164.19 All-time high 12,682.41 12 FEB 1990 ---------------------------------------------------------------- (Reporting by Joan Hsu; Editing by Kim Coghill) ((If you have a query or comment on this story, send an email to news.feedback.asia@thomsonreuters.com)) ASIA-PACIFIC STOCK MARKETS: Pan-Asia...... 14:48 14Jul09 RTRS-Taiwan stocks end up 1.66 pct, tech shares gain * LCD shares lead technology gains * Banking shares steady after president's comments on MOU * Optoelectronics gain on increasing demand for LCD (Adds closing prices, details) TAIPEI, July 14 (Reuters) - Taiwan stocks rose 1.66 percent on Tuesday, with LCD makers such as AU Optronics <2409.tw> leading gains on healthy demand for flat panels in key markets like China. Financial shares <.TFNI> also rose after Taiwan's President Ma Ying-jeou told a local newspaper in an interview that Taiwan could soon sign a financial memorandum of understanding (MOU) with China. [ID:nTP319759] The main TAIEX shares index <.TWII> ended up 108.59 points to 6,639.41, staging a rebound after posting its worst daily percentage loss in three months on Monday. Turnover was thin at T$96.8 billion ($2.9 billion) compared with Monday's T$120 billion as investors stayed sidelined ahead of the earnings season in the United States. "Technology shares jumped on better-than-expected June sales and on prospects of better earnings in the third quarter," said Andrew Deng, an assistant vice president at Taiwan International Securities. "Electronics shares have been quite resilient as investors shifted their focus away from China-related issues and on to fundamentals such as demand," he said, adding that he expected the index to trade between 6,100 and 6,600 points this week. The electronics sub-index <.TELI>, which rose 2.17 percent on Tuesday, has gained 53 percent since the start of the year, outperforming the main TAIEX index's 45 percent rise. The optoelectronics sub-index <.TOPI> jumped 4.54 percent, with LCD maker AU Optronics and smaller rival Chi Mei <3009.tw> rising 6.54 percent and 4.14 percent, respectively, as demand to replace bulky CRT TVs with LCD models propelled the market. [ID:nSEO174521] Analysts said the European Commission's probe into price-fixing by global LCD makers had limited impact on Taiwan's companies so far. [ID:nTP56552] Electronics giant Hon Hai <2317.tw> rose 2.80 percent on an optimistic outlook for the third quarter as demand for electronics devices increases during the back-to-school season. Financial shares steadied after sharp losses in the previous session, helped by the China MOU news. "I don't think the news had a huge impact on financial shares because investors think it has already been reflected, given the sector's latest gains," added Deng. The banking and insurance sub-index <.TFNI> gained 0.91 percent, lagging the main index's rise, with Cathay Financial Holding <2882.tw> advancing 1.47 percent. --------------------TAIEX IN PERSPECTIVE-------------------- Move on day 1.66 percent Close on day 6,639.41 2009 intraday high 7,084.83 2009 intraday low 4,164.19 All-time high 12,682.41 12 FEB 1990 ------------------------------------------------------------ (Reporting by Joan Hsu; Editing by Jonathan Hopfner) ((If you have a query or comment on this story, send an email to news.feedback.asia@thomsonreuters.com)) ASIA-PACIFIC STOCK MARKETS: Pan-Asia......[STXNEWS/AS] Japan........[.T] S.Korea....[.KS] S.E. 17:07 13Jul09 RTRS-Taiwan dollar at 2-½ month low on funds outflow * Brisk foreign fund outflows after stocks fall * Exporters provide support * Taiwan dollar seen at T$33.0-T$33.2 in coming days * NDFs narrow on offshore U.S. dollar buying (Adds details, quotes) TAIPEI, July 13 (Reuters) - The Taiwan dollar fell to a 2-½ month closing low on Monday on fund outflows from the equity market, which fell following news of a possible delay in the signing of a long-awaited financial deal with China. U.S. dollar selling by exporters helped cut some losses, but the Taiwan currency ended at T$33.193, its weakest close since April 30. The Taiwan dollar fell to as low as T$33.201 during trade. "Stocks fell so much today and foreign funds were getting out of the Taiwan market, which pushed the Taiwan dollar lower," said a dealer in Taipei. "But exporters sold some U.S. dollars during the session since the Taiwan dollar weakened beyond T$33, though there were some who were waiting on the sidelines to wait for the Taiwan dollar to weaken even further." Exporters usually prefer a weaker Taiwan dollar because they can increase their foreign currency earnings. The dominant factor behind the Taiwan dollar's fall was the main TAIEX index <.TWII> which fell 3.53 percent, logging its biggest daily percentage drop in three months. On Monday, foreign funds became net sellers for a second straight session by unloading another net T$6.8 billion ($206 million) in Taiwan stocks. Dealers expect the Taiwan dollar to trend lower in coming days as investors might shy away from risky assets ahead of the U.S. corporate earnings season, with the currency seen trading mainly between T$33.0 and T$33.2. 0800 GMT PREVIOUS DAY T$ (Taipei Forex Inc) 33.193 33.050 Volume in $ mln (Taipei Forex Inc) 1,243 782 T$ (Cosmos) 33.190 33.040 Six-month NDFs -0.290/-0.240 -0.380/-0.330 Note: Taipei Forex Inc is Taiwan's main forex exchange; Cosmos is a smaller exchange Source: NDFs quotations from Prebon Asia For more foreign exchange news, please click [nTOPFRX] (Reporting by Lee Chyen Yee and Argin Chang; Editing by Kazunori Takada) ((chyenyee.lee@thomsonreuters.com; +886 2 2508-0815; Reuters Messaging: chyenyee.lee.reuters.com@reuters.net)) ((If you have a query or comment on this story, send an email to news.feedback.asia@thomsonreuters.com)) Keywords: MARKETS TAIWAN CURRENCY/

14:28 13Jul09 RTRS-Taiwan stocks post worst daily drop in 3 mths * Financials fall on worries of delay in agreement with China * Tourism, construction also fall on China concerns * Taiwan stocks underperform some other bourses in Asia * The TAIEX to trade between 6,350-6,800 this week (Updated quotes, details, indexes) By Joan Hsu TAIPEI, July 13 (Reuters) - Taiwan stocks ended 3.53 percent lower on Monday, logging its biggest daily percentage fall in 3 months, as worries over a delay of an upcoming financial services agreement with China hurt banking shares. The main TAIEX share index <.TWII> dropped 239.04 points to 6,530.82, its worst single day percentage drop since April 17. Turnover was slightly more active at T$121 billion ($3.7 billion) compared with Friday's T$110 billion, but it was still relatively light as investors were cautious before the U.S. earnings season. "Investors are very, very disappointed with the delay of the financial services agreement, they've built their hopes around it," said Alex Huang, a research department director at Mega International Securities Co. "Investors are taking the news as an excuse to sell their stocks because at this point, they really don't expect the stocks to climb higher." Analysts expected the index to continue to fall this week to trade mainly between 6,350 and 6,800 points. "The index could find support around 6,350, but that's if the corporate earnings in the U.S. turn out well. If not, the figures could very well send the index below 6,350," Huang said. The banking and insurance sub-index <.TFNI> plunged 6.44 percent, with Cathay Financial Holding <2882.tw>, Taiwan's top listed financial holding firm, dropping nearly by its daily 7 percent limit as the company's worse-than-expected second quarter profit added pressure to the stock. [ID:nTP6985] Other China-related issues such as construction shares <.TCOI> and tourism shares <.THOI> dived on fears that the delay of the signing of the financial deal with China could have a profound impact on Taiwan's economic competitiveness. The construction sub-index dropped 6.33 percent, while real estate developer Farglory <5522.tw> fell 7 percent to its daily limit. The tourism sub-index <.THOI> fell 5.19 percent, with hotelier Formosa Hotel <2707.tw> slipping 4.54 percent. Technology shares also declined, with heavyweights such as Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co Ltd <2330.tw> and United Microelectronics Co <2303.tw> dropping 1.96 percent and 2.95 percent, respectively. Bucking the broader trend was Acer <2353.tw>, the world's No.3 PC brand, which traded flat on increasing demand in personal computers. --------------------TAIEX IN PERSPECTIVE-------------------- Move on day 3.53 percent Close on day 6,530.82 2009 intraday high 7,084.83 2009 intraday low 4,164.19 All-time high 12,682.41 12 FEB 1990 ----------------------------------------------------------- For a table of foreign trading in Taiwan stocks, double-click on [ID:nTP170358] (Editing by Jacqueline Wong) ((If you have a query or comment on this story, send an email to news.feedback.asia@thomsonreuters.com)) ASIA-PACIFIC STOCK MARKETS: Pan-Asia......[STXNEWS/AS] Japan........[.T] S.Korea....[.KS] S.E. 15:01 09Jul09 RTRS-Techs push Taiwan stocks to 1-month closing high * TAIEX outperforms other Asian markets * Notebook makers up on Google's new operation system * Technolgy stocks up on positive June sales * Banks, tourism buoyed by China hopes (Updates indexes, add quotes, details) TAIPEI, July 9 (Reuters) - Taiwan stocks rose 1.2 percent on Thursday, with shares of LCD makers including AU Optronics <2409.tw> leading gains in the optoelectronics sector on increasing demand for LCD panels. The main TAIEX share index <.TWII> jumped 80.04 points to 6,748.18, its highest finish since June 6. Turnover was moderate at T$139 billion ($4.2 billion), slightly more than the T$116 billion recorded on Wednesday. The TAIEX index has gained almost 47 percent since January this year, making it one of the top performers among 30 stock indexes tracked by Reuters in the past six months. "Shares of LCD makers and notebook makers pushed the index higher," said Alex Huang, a research director at Mega International Securities Co. AU Optronics and Chi Mei Optoelectronics <3009.tw>, Taiwan's two biggest LCD makers, rose 4.96 percent and 4.68 percent, respectively, on increasing demand for LCD panels in China. The broader optoelectronics sub-index <.TOPI> jumped 2.84 percent after a newspaper reported that Taiwan's panel makers expected the Taiwan government to urge China to allow them to export their products to the mainland with zero customs tax. "But insufficient turnover capped gains, preventing the index from climbing above 6,800, as investors still have doubts about the potential strength and timing of an economic recovery," Huang said. Investors chased major technology plays including Hon Hai <2317.tw>, AU Optronics and Mediatek <2454.tw>, with the three being the session's most actively traded counters by turnover. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing <2330.tw> , the world's top contract chipmaker rose 1.65 percent, while electronic parts giant Hon Hai rose 1.93 percent. The semiconductor sub-index <.TSII> rose 0.72 percent after a research report said global semiconductor and electronic equipment sales would improve in the second half of 2009 and 2010. [ID:nSE0165008] United Microelectronics Corp <2303.tw> fell 0.43 percent ahead of is June sales report due later on Thursday. The electronics sub-index <.TELI> rose 1.21 percent, as a newspaper report said 11 Taiwanese electronics companies had reported record monthly sales for June, indicating technology demand was not as weak as in the second quarter. Acer <2353.tw>, the world's No.3 PC brand rose 1.66 percent, while netbook PC pioneer Asustek Computer <2357.tw> gained 2 percent, after Google Inc announced its plan to launch a new operating system for personal computers. [ID:nL8468341]. Quanta Computer <2409.tw>, the world's largest contract laptop PC maker, ended flat, after second-quarter shipments surpassed its own forecast. Financial issues ranked among the top gainers with Fubon Financial <2881.tw>, Taiwan's fifth-largest financial holding firm, rising 4.22 percent. HOT STOCKS -- Hotel operator Formosa Hotel <2707.tw> rose 4.03 percent, after Taiwan's government said it would consider allowing Chinese visitors to travel freely -- without joining tour groups -- to the island of Matsu on a trial basis. The tourism sub-index <.THOI>, the session's top advancer, rose 3.12 percent. -- Chunghwa Picture Tubes Ltd (CPT) <2475.tw>, an LCD unit under Tatung Group, jumped 6.8 percent, after a newspaper quoted the group's chairman as saying it was likely to announce a new strategic partner in the next one to two months. --------------------TAIEX IN PERSPECTIVE-------------------- Move on day 1.20 percent Close on day 6,748.18 2009 intraday high 7,084.83 2009 intraday low 4,164.19 All-time high 12,682.41 12 FEB 1990 ------------------------------------------------------------[ET ((Reporting by Joan Hsu; Editing by Chris Lewis)) ((If you have a query or comment on this story, send an email to news.feedback.asia@thomsonreuters.com)) Keywords: MARKETS TAIWAN STOCKS

15:01 08Jul09 RTRS-Taiwan stocks end lower, tech shares slide * Export-reliant tech shares down on demand fears * Weaker Taiwan dollar sends asset shares lower * Evergreen Marine drops on shipping industry woes (Add details and quotes) TAIPEI, July 8 (Reuters) - Taiwan stocks fell 0.7 percent on Wednesday, their worst daily percentage drop in one week, with export-reliant tech shares such as TSMC <2330.tw> sinking on worries over slowing demand from China and the United States. The main TAIEX share index <.TWII> closed 47.08 points lower at 6,668.14. Softer turnover of T$116 billion ($3.5 billion) showed that investors fretted the local market could pull back further following months of rallies. "Taiwan stocks tracked losses in both the U.S. and China stock markets today, with export-reliant technology shares being hit the hardest," said Kevin Chung, an analyst at Jih Sun Investment Consulting Co. The stock market will be trapped in a tight range between 6,500-6,700 points in the short term, as foreign investors are reluctant to trade because of a volatile local dollar, Chung said. Shares of TSMC, the world's top contract chip maker, dropped 1.81 percent, dragging the broader semiconductor sub-index <.TSII> down 0.31 percent, while its smaller rival United Microelectronics Corp, (UMC) <2303.tw> rose 4.48 percent. TSMC and UMC, which together take up about two-thirds of the global chip foundry market, sell the bulk of their products to clients in the United States. The two companies are set to report June sales later this week. Quanta <2382.tw>, the world's largest contract laptop PC maker, dropped 0.85 percent, pulling the broader computer and peripherals sub-index <.TCPI> 0.49 percent lower. The optoelectronics sector <.TOPI> rose 0.67 percent, outperforming the broader electronics sub-index <.TELI>, which edged down 0.13 percent, and the main board. AU Optronics <2409.tw> rose 0.88 percent on news that Taiwan's government would soon launch a programme that encourages the use of electronic reading devices, or e-books, which require a new generation of flexible displays. Asset-related shares dropped on a weaker Taiwan dollar, with Taiwan Fertilizer <1722.tw> dropping 0.93 percent. The banking and insurance sub-index <.TFNI> fell 1.12 percent, with China Development Financial <2883.tw> falling more than 2 percent after it sold its 20 percent stake in the Taipei 101 skyscraper to Ting Hsin International Group. Taiwan's Evergreen Marine <2603.tw>, the world's fourth-largest container line, fell 3.37 percent after it said on Wednesday that it would dismantle a sixth of its fleet over the next four years as it sees no clear signs of an economic recovery [ID:nTP97297]. 14:39 07Jul09 RTRS-Taiwan stocks hit 1-mth closing high, Mediatek up * MediaTek, HTC up on better-than-expected results * Semiconductor sub-index best performer within tech sector * Financials gain led by China Development Financial (Adds closing prices, quotes) TAIPEI, July 7 (Reuters) - Taiwan stocks rose 0.98 percent on Tuesday to a one-month closing high, as tech shares including Mediatek Inc <2454.tw> and smartphone maker HTC Corp <2498.tw> rose on better-than-expected second-quarter earnings. The main TAIEX share index <.TWII> closed 65.31 points higher at 6,715.22, its highest finish since June 6. Turnover was moderate as shares worth T$128 billion ($3.88 billion) changed hands, slightly more than the T$104 billion recorded on Monday. "Major technology sectors, especially (chip) design, gained today to pull the main board up and make it one of the best performers among global stock markets," said Alan Tseng, a vice-president of Yuanta Securities. The performance of Taiwan's stock market in the past six months is second only to China's among 30 stock indexes tracked by Reuters. MediaTek Inc, Taiwan's largest chip designer, rose 5.06 percent after reporting better-than-expected second-quarter revenue. The company said sales for June totalled T$8.9 billion ($270 million), up more than 30 percent from last year. MediaTek shares have nearly doubled since the beginning of this year, largely on the back of greater demand for the company's chips in China. HTC Corp, the world's fourth-largest smartphone brand, jumped 3.25 percent after it reported second-quarter earnings that beat expectations on Monday, as a line of new products helped cushion it from the economic slow down. [ID: nTP337371]. Mediatek and HTC were the session's two most actively traded shares by turnover. The semiconductor sub-index <.TSII> was the top gainer within the tech industry, rising 2.6 percent, with sector leader Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co Ltd (TSMC) <2330.tw> , up 1.84 percent. LED (light-emitting diode) related shares also gained on expectations of stronger demand from China. LED chip suppliers Epistar <2448.tw> and Formosa Epixtaxy <3061.tw> jumped 4.41 percent and 6.87 percent, respectively. AU Optronics Corp <2409.tw>, the island's top LCD maker, gained 0.59 percent on expectations that demand for panels used in flat-screen televisions and computer monitors could rise. The optoelectronics sub-index <.TOPI> advanced 1.37 percent. The financial sub-index <.TFNI> also climbed, led by China Development Financial <2883.tw>, which surged 5.73 percent after a local newspaper said that it had sold its 19.51 percent stake in the Taipei 101 building worth T$3.735 billion. --------------------TAIEX IN PERSPECTIVE-------------------- Move on day 0.98 percent Close on day 6,715.22 2006 intraday high 6,797.20 2006 intraday low 6,373.63 All time high 12,682.41 12 FEB 1990 --------------------------------------------------------------- For a table of foreign trading in Taiwan stocks, double-click on [ID:nTP170358] ((Reporting by Joan Hsu; Editing by Jonathan Hopfner)) ((If you have a query or comment on this story, send an email to news.feedback.asia@thomsonreuters.com)) ASIA-PACIFIC STOCK MARKETS: Pan-Asia......[STXNEWS/AS] Japan........[.T] S.Korea....[.KS] S.E.
