14:58 06Jul09 RTRS-Taiwan stocks edge lower as tech shares weigh * Tech shares weigh ahead of corporate earnings * Urban regeneration programme lifts property shares (Adds quotes) TAIPEI, July 6 (Reuters) - Taiwan stocks fell 0.23 percent on Monday in thin trade as investors shunned shares of major technology companies such as TSMC <2330.tw> before they report June sales later this week. The main TAIEX share index <.TWII> ended down 15.49 points at 6,649.91, trading in and out of negative territory throughout the session. Turnover fell to T$104 billion ($3.2 billion) from Friday's T$113 billion. "Taiwan's investors lack the confidence to push shares higher after the index surged to 7,033 in the beginning of June," said Kevin Chung, analyst at Juh Sun investment Securities. "They will stay put until they get clearer signs from corporate earnings data." Shares of Cathay Financial <2882.tw>, the island's top listed financial holding firm, and Chinatrust Financial <2891.tw>, Taiwan's top credit card issuer, dropped 1.76 percent and 1.85 percent, respectively. "Financial shares fell as a result of the warning to Taiwan's bankers doing businesses in China from the chairman of Taiwan's Financial Supervisory Commision," added Chung, referring to a local newspaper report over the weekend. Technology shares headed downwards as cautious investors awaited June sales and quarterly earnings from U.S. companies. The semiconductor sector <.TSII> dropped 0.4 percent, with heavyweights such as Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co Ltd (TSMC) and United Microelectronics <2303.tw> falling 1.09 percent and 1.35 percent, respectively. "Investors are reluctant to make any major moves ahead of U.S. corporate earnings results, which may affect major technology shares in Taiwan," said Jih Sun's Chung. However LCD maker AU Optronics <2409.tw> and its smaller rival Chi Mei Optoelectronics <3009.tw> gained 0.15 percent and 0.27 percent, respectively, as increased demand for TV panels in China boosted sales. The optoelectronics sub-index <.TOPI> gained 0.21 percent as investors bet on better sales in the peak season. Property shares <.TCOI> rose 1.68 percent, extending recent gains inspired by hopes of more Chinese investment on the island. Real estate developer Farglory <5522.tw> rose 0.12 percent.
