The main TAIEX share index <.TWII> edged up 14.48 points to 6,953.34, its highest finish since June 1. Turnover was modest at T$151 billion ($4.6 billion) but higher than Monday's T$144 billion. "There are two forces pulling on opposite directions, with some investors looking to book profits now, while others are waiting for the index to climb higher," said Kevin Yang, a president at Paradigm Asset Management Co Ltd. "These investors are likely to maintain their wait and see stances until second quarter results provide a clearer outlook." Taiwan's major technology companies, including LCD maker AU Optronics <2409.tw>, are due to report their quarterly earnings later this week. Yang said the TAIEX index would likely trade between 6,800 and 7,000 for the next few sessions. PC-related shares helped the index stay on the positive side, with contract notebook makers Quanta and Compal <2324.tw> gaining 2.29 percent and 3.86 percent, respectively, after a research firm said PC shipments in the Asia Pacific region in the second quarter were better than expected. [ID:nTP45700] The broader computer and peripheral equipment sub-index <.TCPI> gained 0.53 percent, outperforming the broader electronics sub-index <.TELI>, which edged up 0.16 percent. Quanta, the world's biggest contract laptop PC maker, got another boost from a report that it is expected to secure more than 40 percent of Hewlett-Packard's laptop orders next year, supplying about 16 million laptops to the U.S. PC vendor. TSMC <2330.tw> climbed 1.28 percent after client Texas Instruments Inc posted a stronger-than-expected quarterly profit and outlook. [ID:nB86748] Bucking the trend were the world's No. 3 PC brand Acer <2353.tw> and netbook PC pioneer Asustek <2357.tw>, whose shares fell 2.06 percent and 1.04 percent, respectively, after both stocks staged a rally recently. The world's No.3 LCD maker AU Optronics <2409.tw> gained 0.26 percent, while the overall optoelectronics sub-index <.TOPI> went up 0.75 percent. LCD panel prices have climbed in recent months, largely on the back of China's stimulus package to boost domestic spending. HOT STOCKS -- Chinatrust <2891.tw> gained 0.67 percent after it joined U.S. private equity firm Bain Capital in a bid for AIG's Taiwan insurance unit Nan Shan. [ID:nHKG291296] -- China Steel <2002.tw> climbed 0.5 percent after a company sources said the island's top steel maker could resume operations for one of its four blast furnaces in late August to meet increasing demand in steels in United States, China and Taiwan.
