The main TAIEX share index <.TWII> closed up 41.70 points at 6,780.30, its highest close since June 6. Turnover was active at T$150 billion ($4.5 billion), its highest since June 9, as signs of a global economic recovery boosted investor sentiment. "PC-related shares were the top gainers, with positive economic data from the U.S. and China signalling a possible revival in consumer buying, which is very positive for local technology companies," said Kevin Chung, an analyst at Jih Sun Investment Consulting Co. Technology shares will continue to be in the spotlight for the next few sessions, as investors brace for more earnings results from major U.S. corporations. "But investors should look out for a correction in the near future, given the sub-index's recent rally," said Chung, who expects the stock index to remain range-bound before the end of this week, trading mainly between 6,700 and 6,900. The electronics sub-index <.TELI> has gained about 56 percent since the start of the year, outpacing a 48 percent rise on the main board. Acer, the world's No.3 PC brand, surged 6 percent after strong U.S. earnings and a report on better-than-expected global PC shipments in the second quarter.[ID:nN15184031] PC-related shares in Taiwan also jumped on expectations the worst was over for the battered technology sector, with Quanta <2382.tw>, the world's largest contract manufacturer of laptop PCs, rising to its 7 percent limit. [ID:nTP216141] The upbeat performance of PC makers pushed the broader computer and peripheral equipment sub-index <.TCPI> up 3.09 percent, making it the session's top advancer. The banking and insurance sub-index <.TFNI> rose 0.87 percent, giving up early gains as investors booked profits after it gained 2.28 percent in the previous session on upbeat earnings from Goldman Sachs . China Airlines <2610.tw> meanwhile rose as much as 2.3 percent, outperforming the broad market, after the company said it expected to break even this year following consecutive quarterly losses. But the stock erased gains to end 0.6 percent lower as analysts said high oil prices and fewer-than-expected Chinese tourists could put pressure on the company's results. --------------------TAIEX IN PERSPECTIVE-------------------- Move on day 0.62 percent Close on day 6,780.30 2009 intraday high 7,084.83 2009 intraday low 4,164.19 All-time high 12,682.41 12 FEB 1990 ------------------------------------------------------------ (Reporting by Joan Hsu; Editing by Dhara Ranasinghe) ((If you have a query or comment on this story, send an email to news.feedback.asia@thomsonreuters.com)) ASIA-PACIFIC STOCK MARKETS: Pan-Asia......[STXNEWS/AS] Japan........[.T] S.Korea....[.KS] S.E.
