The main TAIEX share index <.TWII> finished 98.07 points higher at 7,536.05, tracking overnight gains on Wall Street and outperforming regional bourses. Compal Electronics, the world's No.2 contract laptop PC maker, jumped 3.71 percent, sending the computer and peripheral equipment sub-index <.TCPI> up 2.68 percent. Taiwan's Innolux Display Corp <3481.tw>, the world's No.2 LCD monitor maker, will acquire small-display maker TPO Displays <3195.two>, of which Compal owned 29 percent, via a share swap. "Not only did Compal remove a financial burden by selling TPO Displays, it can also claim part of TPO's future earnings," said Angela Hsiang, an analyst at KGI Securities. Other PC companies also gained, with Acer <2353.tw> rising 1.01 percent after a local newspaper cited company Chairman J.T. Wang as saying he expects 10 percent revenue growth in the fourth quarter from the preceding three months. Key technology exporters including Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co Ltd (TSMC) <2330.tw> gained ground after U.S. data showed a rebound in the services sector. TSMC, the world's largest contract chipmaker and the session's most active share by turnover, was up 0.65 percent. Shares of smartphone maker HTC <2498.tw> lagged the big board, rising 0.71 percent ahead of its third-quarter earnings, which are expected later on Tuesday. Turnover was a healthy T$146 billion ($4.5 billion), compared with Monday's T$95 billion and last week's daily average of about T$108 billion. "Foreign buying into Taiwan stocks has slowed since the beginning of October because they've become too expensive," said Alex Huang, a research director at Mega International Securities Co, who expects the main index to extend mild gains until the end of this week, trading between 7,500 and 7,600. The TAIEX has gained more than 60 percent since it hit a trough in January early this year. Financial shares <.TFNI> also rode on the upbeat momentum to close 1.47 percent higher, with Cathay Financial <2882.tw>, the island's top listed financial holding firm and the session's most active stock by volume, rising 2.86 percent. Chinatrust Financial <2891.tw> rose 2.37 percent after a local newspaper said it had lost in a bid for AIG's Taiwan insurance unit Nan Shan Life to Primus Financial. [ID:nTP89587] In September, sources told Reuters that Chinatrust Financial had offered $2.4 billion for Nan Shan, outbidding rivals.
