14:21 20Oct09 RTRS-Taiwan stocks edge higher, helped by tech shares * Tech shares up after Apple's solid earnings * LCDs up on news of Corning's Taiwan production disruption * PC vendors extend gains ahead of Windows 7 launch (Updates indexes, adds quotes, details) TAIPEI, Oct 20 (Reuters) - Taiwan stocks ended up 0.03 percent on Tuesday, gaining for a fifth session, with Apple's suppliers such as Quanta <2382.tw> rising after the U.S. PC brand's quarterly results exceeded analysts' forecasts. The main TAIEX share index <.TWII> finished up 2.20 points at 7,753.52 after hitting a fresh 2009 intraday high at 7,811.92 by midday. Turnover was slightly more active at T$125 billion ($3.9 billion), compared with Monday's T$112 billion. Quanta Computer, the world's largest contract laptop PC maker, rose 2.68 percent. The broader electronics sub-index <.TELI> climbed 0.31 percent. "We would've seen a pull-back if it wasn't for upbeat earnings from the United States, as the market generally expects tech companies' sales to peak in October," said Bevan Yeh, a senior fund manager at Prudential Financial Securities Investment Trust. Yeh said the main index would continue taking cues from earnings results at home and in the United States, but was unlikely to see a broad-based gain any time soon as it has been hovering at a 16-month high for the past month. Electronics parts giant Hon Hai <2317.tw>, another key supplier to Apple Inc, ended flat. Hon Hai's share price has more than doubled from the begining of this year. AU Optronics <2409.tw>, Taiwan's biggest LCD maker, advanced 1.55 percent after Corning Inc said on Monday a weekend power disruption at its Taiwan plant would hurt glass production in the fourth quarter. [ID:nN19369828]. However, its gains underperformed the 3.3 percent rally in South Korean peer LG Display <034220.ks> on hopes that the glass shortage could help boost LCD prices. Taiwan President Ma Ying-jeou said on Monday the island had not considered allowing its LCD firms to make large panels on the mainland for now. [ID:nTP169514] TSMC <2330.tw> and UMC <2303.tw>, the world's two largest contract chipmakers, rose 0.98 percent and 3.32 percent, respectively, after Texas Instruments Inc posted quarterly profit and revenue that exceeded Wall Street's estimates on improving chip demand. [ID:nN19395244] HOT STOCKS -- Automobile makers such as Yulon Motor <2201.tw> fell about 2 percent after the Taiwan government's plan to levy a green energy tax starting in 2011. -- PC vendors extended their gains from the previous session on hopes the launch of Windows 7 operating system could boost PC sales. Asustek <2357.tw> jumped 3.28 percent, while the computer and peripheral sub-index <.TCPI> edged up 0.51 percent. "Their gains could be quite premature as we don't know how computer users will react to the new software," said Prudential's Yeh. ---------------------TAIEX IN PERSPECTIVE---------------- Move on day 0.03 pct Close on day 7,753.52 2009 intraday high 7,811.92 2009 intraday low 4,164.19 All-time high 12,682.41 12 FEB 1990 ----------------------------------------------------------- For a table of foreign trading in Taiwan stocks, double-click on [ID:nTP170358] ((Reporting by Joan Hsu; Editing by Jonathan Hopfner)) ((If you have a query or comment on this story, send an email to news.feedback.asia@thomsonreuters.com)) ASIA-PACIFIC STOCK MARKETS: Pan-Asia......[STXNEWS/AS] Japan........[.T] S.Korea....[.KS] S.E.
