14:34 12Oct09 RTRS-Taiwan stocks end up as T$ climbs, helped by plays * Companies with large land assets climb on stronger T$ * Hon Hai outperforms after solid September sales * Analysts see TAIEX between 7,400-7,700 points this week (Updates indexes, quotes) TAIPEI, Oct 12 (Reuters) - Taiwan stocks edged up 0.37 percent on Monday, as a stronger Taiwan dollar propped up shares of companies with substantial land holdings but weighed on some major technology exporters, including UMC <2303.tw>. The main TAIEX share index <.TWII> ended up 27.92 points at 7,599.88. UMC , the world's second-largest contract chipmaker, fell 0.65 percent, while the electronics sub-index <.TELI> rose 0.49 percent. Turnover was light at T$106 billion ($3.28 billion), compared with Friday's T$132 billion and last week's daily average of T$140 billion, as caution prevailed ahead of U.S. data and earnings later this week. A rising Taiwan dollar boosted shares of companies that own large land assets such as Grand Petrochemical <1312.tw> and Formosan Rubber <2107.tw>, which jumped 6.96 percent and 2.88 percent, respectively. Last Thursday, the Taiwan dollar had risen to the highest closing level in a year due to foreign fund inflows and exporters' deals. "It is an established trend that the Taiwan dollar would rise further, and this has become a concern as a stronger local currency could cause foreign exchange losses for major exporters," said Bevan Yeh, a senior fund manager at Prudential Financial Securities Investment Trust. UMC's larger rival TSMC <2330.tw> ended up 0.16 percent after its quarterly sales rose by a fifth from the previous three months due to growing chip demand. [ID:nTP334864] Electronics part giant, Hon Hai <2317.tw>, the session's most-active stock by turnover, advanced 0.79 percent after reporting a 38 percent rise in September sales from August. [ID:nCT0314253] Analysts said the main index could take cues from Wall Street throughout the week as major technology companies, including Intel , are set to report their quarterly earnings. "We think the main index could trek higher, as quarterly results from technology companies in the United States could turn out quite well," said Yeh. HOT STOCKS -- Powerchip Semiconductor Corp <5346.two> jumped 6.81 percent after its venture with Japanese PC memory maker Elpida Memory Inc <6665.t> turned profitable in July-September on rising DRAM prices. [ID:nT273961] -- Chip designer Mediatek Inc <2454.tw> fell 0.4 percent even after a newspaper reported it is set to introduce new chip solutions for 2.75-generation smartphones next year. ---------------------TAIEX IN PERSPECTIVE------------------ Move on day 0.37 pct Close on day 7,599.88 2009 intraday high 7,635.66 2009 intraday low 4,164.19 All-time high 12,682.41 12 FEB 1990 -------------------------------------------------------------- For a table of foreign trading in Taiwan stocks, double-click on [ID:nTP170358] (Reporting by Joan Hsu; Editing by Ken Wills) ((If you have a query or comment on this story, send an email to news.feedback.asia@thomsonreuters.com)) ASIA-PACIFIC STOCK MARKETS: Pan-Asia......[STXNEWS/AS] Japan........[.T] S.Korea....[.KS] S.E.
