14:34 15Oct09 RTRS-Taiwan stocks gain, helped by techs and financials * TAIEX hits near 16-month closing high * Gains in tech shares ease after recent rally * Banks up after JPMorgan Chase results (Updates indexes, adds quotes and details) TAIPEI, Oct 15 (Reuters) - Taiwan stocks edged up 0.19 percent on Thursday, as solid earnings from major U.S. companies lifted technology exporters, such as Acer <2353.tw>. The main TAIEX share index <.TWII> finished up 14.65 points at 7,710.40, after hitting a near 16-month intraday high of 7,780.66. Turnover rose to T$165 billion ($5 billion) from Wednesday's T$148 billion. Acer, which surpassed Dell Inc in the third quarter to become the world's No. 2 PC maker, ended up 0.23 percent after rising as much as 1.22 percent in early trade. "We are seeing limited gains in major technology companies because positive earnings were within expectations and were already reflected," said Michael On, a managing director at Beyond Asset Management. TSMC <2330.tw> and UMC <2303.tw>, the world's two largest contract chip makers, gained 0.47 percent and 1.55 percent respectively. PC shares rose after research firm IDC said global personal computer shipments inched up 2.3 percent in the third quarter as the sector continued its gradual recovery. [ID:nN14253064] Intel said it was comfortable with analysts' forecast of about 10 percent growth in the PC market next year. [ID:nTP240821] But Quanta Computer <2382.tw>, fell 0.88 percent after a newspaper reported that the world's top contract laptop PC maker spent $10 million to buy the preferred shares of U.S. chip designer Tilera. Financial shares outperformed the broader board after positive earnings from JPMorgan Chase & Co . Cathay Financial <2882.tw>, the island's top-listed financial holding firm, advanced 0.84 percent. Meanwhile, a local newspaper report that China's banking regulators have approved several Chinese banks to invest in Taiwan's banks boosted smaller local financial holding firms. E.Sun Financial <2884.tw> jumped 4.69 percent, lifting the banking and insurance sub-index <.TFNI> up 0.7 percent. HOT STOCKS -- Inventec <2356.tw> fell 0.73 percent after teaming up with TPV Technology <0903.hk> in a $20 million joint venture to make all-in-one desktop computers.
