The main TAIEX share index <.TWII> finished 26.10 points higher at 7,437.98, after recording its worst single-day percentage fall in seven weeks on Friday. Turnover was thin at T$95 billion ($2.9 billion), less active than Friday's T$116 billion. "Weak job data out of the United States weighed on sentiment a little, but individual companies that are expected to have better quarterly earnings outperformed," said John Chiu, a vice president at Fuh Hwa Securities Investment Trust. Analysts said the TAIEX could trade between 7,200 and 7,500 this week. Compal Electronics, the world's No.2 contract laptop PC maker, advanced 2.49 percent. The electronics sub-index <.TELI> was up 0.22 percent. Goldman Sachs had said Compal's selling of its subsidiary TPO Display could help remove a cash flow overhang on Compal. Taiwan's Innolux Display Corp <3481.tw>, the world's No.2 LCD monitor maker, plans to acquire TPO Displays, formerly known as Toppoly. [ID:nTPU001723] Innolux Display Corp was up 0.86 percent, while TPO Displays ended up 0.5 percent. TSMC <2330.tw>, the world's largest contract chip maker and the session's most actively traded stock by volume and turnover, fell 1.12 percent. UMC <2303.tw> ended flat. TSMC and UMC are set to announce their September sales later this week. The electronics sub-index <.TELI> climbed more than 20 percent in the July-September period, outperforming the main index's 17 percent gain. A stronger local currency boosted asset-related shares. Construction shares <.TCOI> advanced 1.42 percent, with Kindom Construction <2520.tw> surging by its 7 percent daily limit. "Constructions shares rose as a result of a stronger local currency, and as some investors have bought real estate in an attempt to maintain the value of their assets," said Chiu. HOT STOCKS -- Compal Communications <8078.tw> went limit up after a newspaper reported that Nokia may allow contract makers such as Compal and Chi Mei Communications to manufacture a handset running its proprietary Maemo operating system. ---------------------TAIEX IN PERSPECTIVE---------------- Move on day 0.35 pct Close on day 7,437.98 2009 intraday high 7,599.62 2009 intraday low 4,164.19 All-time high 12,682.41 12 FEB 1990 ---------------------------------------------------------- For a table of foreign trading in Taiwan stocks, double-click on [ID:nTP170358] ((Reporting by Joan Hsu; Editing by Jonathan Hopfner)) ((If you have a query or comment on this story, send an email to news.feedback.asia@thomsonreuters.com)) ASIA-PACIFIC STOCK MARKETS: Pan-Asia......[STXNEWS/AS] Japan........[.T] S.Korea....[.KS] S.E.
