14:22 30Sep09 -Taiwan stocks at 2-wk high on foreign buying, TSMC up * TSMC, UMC and Chi Mei extend gains * C.bank says no signs of overheating in stock prices so far * Market up 17 pct in Q3, following 23 pct in Q2 * Fubon jumps after scrapping GDR plan to raise $900 mln (Updates quotes; Adds hot stocks, details) By Joan Hsu TAIPEI, Sept 30 (Reuters) - Taiwan stocks closed up 1.07 percent at a two-week closing high on Wednesday as foreign investors extended massive buying in TSMC <2330.tw> and other heavyweights. The main TAIEX share index <.TWII> rose 79.19 points to 7,509.17, a level not seen since Sept. 18 and hovering at a 15-month closing high. The main index finished the July-September period up 17 percent, after logging a 23 percent gain in the previous three months, which was the best rally since the fourth quarter of 2001. On Tuesday, foreign investors bought a net T$17.4 billion ($539 million) worth of Taiwan shares, expanding their purchases to T$130 billion for September, the highest monthly purchase since June 2007, according to data compiled by the Taiwan stock exchange. Topping the most actively traded lists by volume and turnover was contract chipmaker TSMC , rising 1.26 percent on top of its gain to 6.2 percent in the last two sessions. The semiconductor sub-index <.TSII> climbed 1.71 percent to its highest level in over 16 months. The gains by TSMC and other chip stocks come after Taiwan's government said it would allow contract chipmakers and flat-panel companies to expand their investments and acquire rivals in China. [ID:nTP321454] "Continued foreign buying helped push the main index up, as technology companies in Taiwan offered promising earnings and valuations," said Alan Tseng, a vice-president at Capital Securities. "Like South Korea, Taiwan relies on exports of electronic products for its economy, and I think the electronics sector will be a main boosting force for the main index in the fourth quarter. But Tseng said the index's rise would be moderate in the fourth quarter, given that it had climbed more than 60 percent since the beginning of this year, largely on the back of closer business ties with China. TSMC's smaller rival UMC <2303.tw> edged up 0.32 percent. LCD maker Chi Mei Optoelectronics <3009.tw> gained 0.9 percent, sending the optoelectronics sub-index <.TOPI> up 1.36 percent. Market sentiment also received a boost after Taiwan's central bank said on Wednesday that it saw no signs of overheating in the island's stock market or housing prices so far. [ID:nSP464987] Construction shares <.TCOI> rose 3.27 percent, with real estate developer Farglory <5522.tw> up 3.19 percent. HOT STOCKS -- Fubon Financial <2881.tw>, parent of Taiwan's No.2 insurer, advanced 1.4 percent after scrapping a plan for an overseas stock sale that would have raised up to $900 million, after reviewing market conditions. [ID:nTP62516] -- Hotai Motor <2207.tw> jumped 4.67 percent, on a newspaper report that it had raised its sales forecast for this year because of stronger-than-expected demand. -- China Air Lines <2610.tw> and smaller rival Eva Airways <2618.tw> slid 3.59 percent and 5.95 percent, respectively. The new shares of the companies via their rights issues started trading on Wednesday. ---------------------TAIEX IN PERSPECTIVE------------------ Move on day 1.07 pct Close on day 7,509.17 2009 intraday high 7,558.88 2009 intraday low 4,164.19 All-time high 12,682.41 12 FEB 1990 ---------------------------------------------------------- For a table of foreign trading in Taiwan stocks, double-click on [ID:nTP170358] ((Editing by Chris Lewis)) ((If you have a query or comment on this story, send an email to news.feedback.asia@thomsonreuters.com)) ASIA-PACIFIC STOCK MARKETS: Pan-Asia......[STXNEWS/AS] Japan........[.T] S.Korea....[.KS] S.E. 14:23 29Sep09 RTRS-Taiwan stocks log best gain in 1 month led by TSMC * TSMC, UMC led semiconductor shares to 15-month closing high * LCD companies outperform market * CPT rises on Nokia order report (Updates quotes, hot stocks; Adds details) TAIPEI, Sept 29 (Reuters) - Taiwan stocks rose 2 percent to post their biggest daily gain in one month on Tuesday, helped by TSMC <2330.tw>, after the government said it would allow contract chipmakers and flat-panel companies to acquire rivals in China. The main TAIEX share index <.TWII> finished 145.37 points higher at 7,429.98, logging its biggest percentage gain since Sept.1 and highest closing level in nearly a week. "The (China) news was a short-term catalyst for contract chip makers and flat-panel makers' stocks, but I think gains overnight on Wall Street also prompted investors to pick up technology shares," said John Chiu, a vice president at Fuh Hwa Securities Investment Trust. Topping the most active lists by turnover and volume were Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co Ltd (TSMC) <2330.tw> and UMC <2303.tw> . TSMC jumped 4.94 percent and UMC rose 3.63 percent, pushing up the semiconductor sub-index <.TSII> 3.3 percent to its highest closing in more than 15 months. AU Optronics <2409.tw> , the world's No.3 flat-panel maker, advanced 2.76 percent, pushing the optoelectronics sub-index <.TOPI> 2.11 percent higher. Taiwanese firms have urged the government to allow them to invest in mainland China or use more advanced technologies to help cut costs and compete with rivals such as those in South Korea. The government has not given a timetable as to when it will allow such investments, said a government official. [ID:nTP321454] Turnover rose sharply from an over-one-month low in the previous session to T$102 billion ($3.1 billion), compared with Monday's T$76 billion. "It's understandable that investors won't buy stocks because the main index has climbed quite a bit and is hovering around its 2009 high, but they are unlikely to sell their holdings either because data from around the world points to stronger economic fundamentals," said Chiu. Financial shares <.TFNI> climbed 2 percent, with Cathay Financial <2882.tw>, the island's top listed financial holding firm, rising 1.71 percent. HOT STOCKS -- Chunghwa Picture Tubes (CPT) <2475.tw>, a small flat-panel maker, rose 2.16 percent on a newspaper report that it secured orders from Nokia . -- Contract laptop PC maker Inventec <2356.tw> advanced 1.37 percent on a newspaper report that it had won orders from Hewlett-Packard to manufacture notebook PCs. ---------------------TAIEX IN PERSPECTIVE------------------ Move on day 2.0 pct Close on day 7,429.98 2009 intraday high 7,558.88 2009 intraday low 4,164.19 All-time high 12,682.41 12 FEB 1990 -------------------------------------------------------------- For a table of foreign trading in Taiwan stocks, double-click on [ID:nTP170358] ((Reporting by Joan Hsu; Editing by Jonathan Hopfner)) ((If you have a query or comment on this story, send an email to news.feedback.asia@thomsonreuters.com)) ASIA-PACIFIC STOCK MARKETS: Pan-Asia......[STXNEWS/AS] Japan........[.T] S.Korea....[.KS] S.E. The main TAIEX share index <.TWII> fell 60.61 points to 7,284.61 points, its lowest closing level since Sept. 14. Turnover was at its thinnest level in over one month at T$75 billion ($2.3 billion), compared with Friday's T$96 billion and last week's daily average at around T$110 billion. "Taiwan stocks fell as casino-related shares lost ground after residents in Penghu vetoed the government's plan to build a casino resort there," said Tom Tang, a vice-president at Masterlink Investment Advisory. Residents of the Penghu islands voted against a plan to allow Taiwan's first casinos to be built in their county on Saturday, snubbing gaming giants Harrah's Entertainment Inc. [HAMLEH.UL] and MGM Mirage . [ID:nTP176918] Casino-linked shares such as Firich Enterprises <8076.two> and ASTRO <3064.two> fell by their daily limits of close to 7 percent. The tourism sub-index <.THOI> lost 1 percent. Having surged to a 14 month high earlier in September, some fund managers expected the TAIEX to trade rangebound and the turnover to remain thin until the companies post their September sales early next month. "The index faced some pressure of profit-taking, but there have been no major negative events recently that would lead to impulsive selling," said Bevan Yeh, a senior fund manger at Prudential Securities Investment Trust. Smartphone maker HTC Corp <2498.tw>, the most actively traded issue by turnover, slipped 3.13 percent after rival Research In Motion Ltd reported a lower profit and gave a dismal outlook. [ID:nN24466680] Netbook pioneer Asustek <2357.tw> slipped 4.26 percent, sending the the computer and peripheral equipment sub-index <.TCPI> down 2.9 percent. "Most notebook PC makers retreated after a major foreign institution downgraded the whole sector on ground that optimism sparked by the launch of Windows 7 operating system could already be priced in, leaving the share prices little room to increase," said Prudential's Yeh. Asustek's competitors, Quanta <2382.tw> and Compal <2324.tw>, fell 2.9 percent and 3.91 percent, respectively. Mediatek <2454.tw>, Taiwan's top chip design house, gave up gains in early trade to fall 0.2 percent and was the third-most active stock by turnover. A local newspaper reported that Motorola would use Mediatek's solutions in its mobile phones. HOT STOCKS -- Chinatrust Financial <2891.tw> shed 3.76 percent after it said on Friday it plans to raise up to $200 million for its U.S. subsidiary to improve its financial capability. 14:30 25Sep09 RTRS-Taiwan stocks end 4-day loss, helped by banks * Banking and construction shares up after c.bank holds rate * UMC and TSMC lead technology shares higher * Epistar up after securing license from Philips Lumileds * TAIEX seen trading 7,200-7,400 next week (Updates index, adds quotes, details) TAIPEI, Sept 25 (Reuters) - Taiwan stocks rose 0.29 percent on Friday, helped by banking shares such as Fubon Financial <2881.tw> after Taiwan's central bank kept interest rates unchanged and said the pace of economic contraction had eased. The main TAIEX share index <.TWII> edged 21.00 points higher to end at 7,345.22, snapping a four-day losing streak. The TAIEX hovered at a 14-month high but fell 2.4 percent this week, its worst week in one month. Financial shares <.TFNI> were the session's top gainers, up 1.99 percent. Fubon Financial jumped 5.44 percent. Construction shares <.TCOI> were up 0.95 percent, with real estate developer Farglory <5522.tw> rising 3 percent. "Taiwan stocks outperformed regional markets with help from asset-related shares, probably because people felt they could take advantage of a low interest rate to borrow money and make investments," said Michael On, a managing director at Beyond Asset Management. Taiwan's central bank kept the interest rate steady at a record low and left the money supply growth target unchanged at 2.5-6.5 percent although growth in M2 has been exceeding its previous target for most of this year. M2 supply grew 8.17 percent in August from a year earlier. [ID:nTP44833] Financial shares were also buoyed by a local newspaper report that some Taiwanese banks with branches in Hong Kong will be allowed to do deposit and currency exchange business in Chinese yuan in Hong Kong. Taiwanese banks that have set up branches in Hong Kong, such as Chinatrust Financial <2891.tw> and Taishin Financial <2887.tw>, rose 1.67 percent and 2.66 percent, respectively. "Taiwan stocks are going through a technical correction, but we will not likely to see a major movement in the market because turnover is quite thin," said Alex Huang, a research director at Mega International Securities Co. Huang expects the main index to trade mainly between 7,200 and 7,400 next week. The exchange's turnover was light on Friday, with T$96 billion ($3 billion) worth of shares changing hands. Technology shares <.TELI> recouped losses in early trade, edging up 0.11 percent. UMC <2303.tw>, the world's second largest contract chip maker, rose 0.33 percent after a newspaper reported that it could beat its own third-quarter sales target after one of UMC's key clients raised its sales growth target. Its larger rival TSMC <2330.tw>, the world's largest contract chip maker, advanced 0.49 percent. Hon Hai <2317.tw> was flat after a newspaper reported that the electronics giant's Shanghai headquarters would be completed and in charge of its new business. But Catcher Technology Co <2474.tw>, the session's most actively traded stock by turnover, shed 4.02 percent as investors unloaded the stock on concerns it had become overvalued. Department store shares <.TDEI> were among the top gainers, rising 1.59 percent on hopes that a week-long holiday period in China would bring tourists and a boost in sales on the island. HOT STOCKS -- LED chip maker Epistar Corp <2448.tw> rose 0.3 percent after a newspaper reported that it has secured new LED technology licenses from Philips Lumileds after both companies settled a patent lawsuit. -- Chunghwa Picture Tubes (CPT) <2475.tw> slipped 1.77 percent after Chinese regulators approved a private share placement between C.P.T's subsidiary and China's Mindong Electric Group <000536.sz>. 14:22 24Sep09 RTRS-Taiwan stocks fall for 4th session, TSMC weighs * TSMC leads technology shares lower * Investors stay cautious ahead of c.bank rate decision * Construction shares up on hopes of increased investments * Catcher falls after report of Goldman Sachs downgrade (Updates quotes, indexes) TAIPEI, Sept 24 (Reuters) - Taiwan stocks fell 0.71 percent on Thursday to their lowest close in more than a week, with technology heavyweight TSMC <2330.tw> leading losses as an overnight fall on Wall Street triggered a bout of profit-taking. The main TAIEX share index <.TWII> fell for the fourth straight session, closing down 52.54 points at 7,324.22, the lowest close since Sept 14. "Investors were expecting a pull-back and have been keen to cash in their gains in technology and financial shares, and a slide on Wall Street sped up the process," said Eddy Chen, a vice president at the National Investment Trust Co Ltd. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co Ltd (TSMC) , the session's most active share by turnover, fell 2.41 percent, even after Merrill Lynch raised its target price and earnings forecasts on TSMC on hopes of steady growth in demand and low inventory. [ID:nTP64430] Its smaller rival UMC <2303.tw>, also the second most actively traded stock by volume, fell 1.62 percent, sending the semiconductor sub-index <.TSII> 1.22 percent lower. Smartphone maker HTC <2498.tw> fell 0.69 percent. The electronics sub-index <.TELI> was down 0.67 percent. Turnover was light at T$90 billion ($2.8 billion), the lowest in nearly one month, as investors stayed cautious ahead of the central bank's rate-setting meeting later in the day. Taiwan's central bank is expected to keep its benchmark discount rate at a record low of 1.25 percent. [ID:nTP171816] "We don't expect a surprise in the central bank's interest rate decision, but investors will sieve through its comments for further direction on monetary policy," said Chen. Financial shares <.TFNI> fell 0.99 percent, with Chinatrust Financial <2891.tw>, Taiwan's biggest credit card issuer, falling 1.88 percent. But construction shares <.TCOI> recovered from a two-day loss, rising 0.39 percent as investors bought property shares on the expectation that a low interest rate could boost home sales. Construction company Chong Hong <5534.tw> jumped 3.23 percent. HOT STOCKS -- Catcher Technology Co <2474.tw>, a manufacturer of laptop casings, slipped 3.33 percent after a newspaper reported that Goldman Sachs has lowered its rating on Catcher to "neutral" from "buy" on concerns that its shares have become overvalued. -- Far EasTone <4904.tw>, Taiwan's third-largest telecommunications operator, edged 0.53 percent lower after it said it was interested in expanding into the cable TV business. The main TAIEX share index <.TWII> ended 92.27 points lower at 7,376.76, the weakest close since Sept 15 and the biggest single day percentage fall in a week. Turnover was moderate at T$128 billion ($3.95 billion), slightly more active than Tuesday's T$112 billion. Taiwan's central bank will hold a rate-setting meeting on Thursday and is widely expected to keep its benchmark discount rate at a record low of 1.25 percent. [ID:nTP171816] "Investors generally hold an optimistic view about the economy, but a rising jobless rate tells a different story," said Kevin Chung, an analyst at Jih Sun Investment Consulting Co. "So they rely on the Federal Reserve and the local central bank to provide a better view on the current global economy." Chung said the market is likely to trade in a tight range until the end of September. Taiwan's seasonally adjusted jobless rate rose to a record of 6.07 percent in August from 6.01 percent in July. [ID;nTPU0016920] The market's decline was broad-based but financial shares were the most negative influence on the main index. Cathay Financial <2882.tw>, the island's top listed financial holding firm, slipped 2.23 percent, with the banking and insurance sub-index <.TFNI> down 2.18 percent. The financial sector had climbed more than 15 percent in the past month, as foreign and local investors aggressively bought financial shares on hopes of a much anticipated financial agreement with China. Taiwan and China have agreed to open their financial markets to each other, with a memorandum of understanding (MOU) expected to be signed this year. However, smaller LCD panel makers such as Hannstar Display <6116.tw> and Innoclus Display <3481.tw> outperformed, rising 0.41 percent and 1.46 percent, respectively. "While profits of large, flat panel makers might seen to have hit a ceiling, small to mid-size LCD makers are beginning to see growth in demand," said Chung. Hannstar Display was the session's most traded stock by volume, with its daily volume doubling from the average in the past five days. Samsung Electronics <005930.ks>, the world's biggest maker of memory chips, offered a cautious outlook for the semiconductor sector even as the industry is coming out of its two-year slump. [ID:nTP253351] Taiwan's top contract chip makers TSMC <2330.tw> and UMC <2303.tw> dropped 0.32 percent and 1.91 percent, respectively. HOT STOCKS -- Taiwan's Far Eastone <4904.tw> crept 0.54 percent higher after a newspaper reported it held talks with private equity firm MBK about acquiring its ownership in a Taiwan cable TV operator, China Network Systems (CNS). [ID:nTP313495] -- Taiwan High Speed Rail Corp <2633.two> fell 3.12 percent after it picked a government-backed chairman on Tuesday. 14:26 22Sep09 RTRS-Taiwan stocks edge lower, Hon Hai pulls techs lower * Technology shares subdued after recent rally * Bank issues climb on hope of MOU signing by end of 2009 * Chipmaker UMC most actively traded by volume * Innolux up after report of tie-up with a Japanese firm (Updates quotes, details) TAIPEI, Sept 22 (Reuters) - Taiwan stocks closed 0.45 percent lower on Tuesday, with technology heavyweight Hon Hai <2317.tw> leading the way, as investors were cautious before companies post their September sales. The main TAIEX share index <.TWII> ended 33.43 points lower at 7,469.03, lingering near a 15-month closing high. Turnover was less active at T$111 billion ($3.4 billion) from T$123 billion. "Investors have slowed down buying as they await September sales figures. And they want to get a clue of the outlook in 2010," said Bevan Yeh, a senior fund manager at Prudential Financial Securities Investment Trust. Electronics giant Hon Hai <2317>, the most active by turnover, fell 2.37 percent, dragging down the electronics sub-index <.TELI> 0.55 percent lower. Hon Hai had climbed nearly 18 percent in the last month, outperforming the main index's 12 percent rise. "Shares in the tech sector have been going through a correction. In the longer term, technology shares are going to be the driver behind the main index's gains," said Yeh, who forecast Taiwan stocks to trend higher at a steady pace. He expected the market to consolidate between 7,400 and 7,600 points throughout the week. All Taiwan companies are required to report their September sales by Oct 10. Topping the most active list by volume was contract chipmaker UMC <2303.tw>, which advanced 2.6 percent and pushed the semiconductor sub-index <.TSII> up 0.09 percent. Morgan Stanley said in a research report that the semiconductor industry was emerging from a slump as chip prices rose and demand grew, a local newspaper reported on Tuesday. DRAM maker Powerchip Semiconductor <5346.two> rose 3.2 percent. Innolux Display Corp <3481.tw>, a PC monitor maker, climbed 3.9 percent on a newspaper report that it would team up with a Japanese LED maker to boost sales of LED monitors. Financial shares also gained, on a newspaper report that quoted director Wang Yi of China's Taiwan Affairs offices as saying the signing of a financial MOU between two sides could take place by the end of this year. Shin Kong Financial <2888.tw>, parent of Taiwan's No.3 insurer, jumped nearly 4 percent, with banking and insurance sub-index <.TFN> up 0.42 percent. ---------------------TAIEX IN PERSPECTIVE------------------ Move on day -0.45 pct Close on day 7,469.03 2009 intraday high 7,558.88 2009 intraday low 4,164.19 All-time high 12,682.41 12 FEB 1990 ------------------------------------------------------------- For a table of foreign trading in Taiwan stocks, double-click on [ID:nTP170358] ((Reporting by Joan Hsu; Editing by Chris Lewis)) ((If you have a query or comment on this story, send an email to news.feedback.asia@thomsonreuters.com)) ASIA-PACIFIC STOCK MARKETS: Pan-Asia......[STXNEWS/AS] Japan........[.T] S.Korea....[.KS] S.E. The main TAIEX share index <.TWII> finished 24.09 points lower at 7,502.46, snapping a four-session winning streak. Turnover was moderate, with T$123 billion ($3.8 billion) shares traded, higher than last week's daily average of T$117 billion. "The pressure of profit-taking mounted after Taiwan stocks hit a new high in 2009 and overshadowed gains in smaller individual companies," said Kevin Yang, president at Paradigm Asset Management Co Ltd. Mediatek, Taiwan's top chip designer and supplier, declined 2.33 percent to T$503 after climbing mroe than 3 percent last week. BNP Paribas lowered its target price on Mediatek to T$518 on concerns of a drop in its fourth-quarter gross margin. Other tech heavyweights such as TSMC <2330.tw> and UMC <2303.tw> also slipped, falling 0.64 percent and 2.55 percent, respectively, pushing the semiconductor sub-index <.TSII> 0.58 percent lower. TSMC Chairman Morris Chang expected the world's largest contract chipmaker to increase revenue in the fourth quarter from the current three months, a local newspaper reported. [ID:nSP468352] But the optoelectronics sub-index <.TOPI> rose 1 percent, with Chi Mei Optoelectronics <3009.tw> rising 2.37 percent. A local newspaper reported on Monday that Taiwan's LCD makers could pick up orders left by Samsung Electronics <005930.ks> if the South Korean company is barred from making some exports to the United States due to a patent infringement with Sharp. In June, Sharp had won a fight with Samsung over patented technology for liquid crystal displays, according to an administrative law judge's ruling from the U.S. International Trade Commission. [ID:nN15240203] The automobile sub-index <.TAUI> was the session's top gainer, with Yulon Motor <2201.tw> jumping 4.83 percent on a newspaper report of a better-than-expected order in its self-developed vehicle Luxgen. ---------------------TAIEX IN PERSPECTIVE------------------ Move on day -0.32 pct Close on day 7,502.46 2009 intraday high 7,558.88 2009 intraday low 4,164.19 All-time high 12,682.41 12 FEB 1990 ------------------------------------------------------------- For a table of foreign trading in Taiwan stocks, double-click on [ID:nTP170358] (Reporting by Joan Hsu; Editing by Ken Wills) ((If you have a query or comment on this story, send an email to news.feedback.asia@thomsonreuters.com)) ASIA-PACIFIC STOCK MARKETS: Pan-Asia......[STXNEWS/AS] Japan........[.T] S.Korea....[.KS] S.E. 13:59 18Sep09 RTRS-Taiwan stocks at 15-mth high on LCD, bio shares * LCD, biotechnology shares lead Taiwan stocks higher * Turnover thin following losses on Wall Street * Taiwan stocks inching towards overbought territory * Analysts say commodity stocks could rise next (Adds quotes, details) By Kelvin Soh TAIPEI, Sept 18 (Reuters) - Taiwan stocks rose 0.66 percent to a near 15-month closing high on Friday, as continued optimism over the global economic recovery helped boost LCD stocks including Chi Mei <3009.tw>. The main TAIEX share index <.TWII> ended the session up 49.25 points at 7,526.55, its strongest close since June 27 last year. "LCD shares have been climbing for quite a while now, and I'm not confident that they will climb much further," said Kevin Huang, a fund manager at King's Town Bank. "I would prefer to look at commodity-related shares now because the economic uptick could lead to inflationary pressures at some point, which is usually good for commodities." Taiwan's top LCD maker AU Optronics <2409.tw> rose 2.04 percent, while smaller rival Chi Mei closed up 4.32 percent after a local newspaper reported that Chi Mei was considering restarting work at a next-generation factory. Turnover was thin at T$113 billion ($3.5 billion), with some investors staying away after losses on Wall Street overnight. Other gainers included the biotechnology sub-index <.TBII>, which rose 1.95 percent as local media continued to play up fears over the H1N1 flu pandemic. Apex Biotech <1733.tw> was up 3 percent, while Excelsior <4104.tw> rose 5.95 percent. The Taiwanese market has climbed more than 63 percent this year, and is currently the third-best performing index among thirty tracked by Thomson Reuters, just behind China's Shenzhen <.SZSA1> and Shanghai <.SSEA> share indexes. Investors have been betting that closer ties with the island's giant neighbour China and a rebound in consumer demand in the United States, its second-largest export market by country, would be good for Taiwan's export-reliant companies. This month alone, Taiwan stocks have risen over 10 percent, with a relative strength index (RSI) reading of 64 and inching closer towards overbought territory. An RSI reading of above 70 is typically taken to mean that a share is overbought. "We could see some profit-taking pressure in the short term," said Tom Tang, vice-president at Masterlink Investment Securities. "I'm still optimistic about the long term, but the temptation to take profit after this rally is growing." 14:40 17Sep09 RTRS-Taiwan stocks end at 14-month high; Taiwan Mobile up * Taiwan Mobile up after buying Carlyle's cable TV operator * Taiwan Glass surges on news of China investment * Main index seen trading between 7,300 and 7,700 next week (Updates indexes, quotes and details) TAIPEI, Sept 17 (Reuters) - Taiwan stocks ended up 0.5 percent at a 14-month high on Thursday, and Taiwan Mobile <3045.tw> shares outperformed after the company bought Carlyle Group's cable TV unit in Taiwan. The main TAIEX <.TWII> finished 37.06 points higher at 7,477.30. Shares of Taiwan Mobile, the island's No. 2 telecom operator, surged 6.67 percent to a more than 2-month closing high. The electronics sub-index <.TELI> rose 0.27 percent. Taiwan Mobile had agreed to pay $1 billion for Carlyle's Taiwan cable TV unit in a share swap deal and after Bank of America upgraded the firm to "buy" from "neutral". [ID:nTP276635] "Taiwan stocks continued tracking gains on Wall Street and other regional markets, after positive economics data in the United States suggested a global economic recovery and prompted buying," said Alan Tseng, a vice president at Capital Securities. U.S. stocks rose for a third day on Wednesday, as U.S. industrial output advanced for a second consecutive month in August, while a government report showed a bigger-than-expected drop in crude inventories last week, indicating higher demand. [ID:nN16118540] But technology shares <.TELI> curbed the main index's gain. The technology sub-index had risen more than 70 percent since the beginning of this year. "Technology shares are going through a reasonable correction," said Tseng, who expects the main index to trade between 7,300 and 7,500 next week. Turnover was active at T$147 billion ($4.5 billion), up from Wednesday's T$132 billion. The glass and ceramic sub-index <.TGLI> was the market's top gainer, jumping 5.65 percent. Taiwan Glass <1802.tw>, the island's largest glass maker, surged nearly 7 percent on a media report it will spend T$16 billion to build a new factory in China, the company's largest-ever investment. Construction shares <.TCOI> shot up 3.25 percent after a local newspaper reported that average prices of a luxury mansion project in Taipei hit a record T$700 million. Real estate developer Farglory <5522.tw> jumped 5.51 percent. "Asset-related shares outperformed today, as investors bought construction shares to retain value in a stronger Taiwan dollar," Tseng said. The banking and insurance sub-index <.TFNI> climbed 1.27 percent, with Chinatrust Financial <2891.tw> up 4.74 percent. 14:20 16Sep09 RTRS-Taiwan stocks hit fresh 14-mth closing high on techs * Upbeat U.S. retail sales data boost technology shares * PC makers extend gains on hopes of growing demand * Taiwan Mobile gains on buying Carlyle's cable TV business (Updates indexes, quotes and details) TAIPEI, Sept 16 (Reuters) - Taiwan stocks rose 1.28 percent to their highest close in more than 14 months on Wednesday, as positive retail sales data from the United States boosted buying in technology shares such as Asustek <2357.tw>. The main TAIEX share index <.TWII> finished 93.98 points higher at 7,440.24, the highest close since June 30, 2008. Netbook pioneer Asustek outperformed the broader market, rising 2.68 percent. Analysts say Asustek's gross profit margin and sales could improve in the second half of the year on expectations that consumer demand for PCs would increase. U.S. retail sales rose in August at the fastest pace in 3-½ years, offering hope for a solid recovery from a severe recession. [ID:nN15548319] "Taiwan stocks rose amid growing confidence of a stronger global economic recovery," said Kevin Chung, an analyst at Jih Sun Investment Consulting Co. He expects the main index to trade between 7,400 and 7,500 points for the rest of the week. "Downstream technology companies fared especially well today and in the last couple of days, on hopes that growing demand for PCs would bring them more orders." The computer and peripheral equipment sub-index <.TCPI> rose 1.51 percent to a near 16-month high, extending gains from the previous session. Quanta Computer <2382.tw>, the world's largest contract laptop PC maker and a key supplier to top brands such as HP , advanced 1.92 percent. Hewlett-Packard has recently unveiled more than 20 new PCs ranging from netbooks, ultra-thin notebooks and desktop computers in Singapore, a local newspaper reported. Medical-related shares <.TCHI> were among the session's top gainers, jumping 2.35 percent, after the island's health authorities confirmed more deaths on H1N1 infections. Chung said while the main index is seen to trek higher over the next few months, the gains could be limited as high price shares began to show signs of waning momentum. Turnover was more active at T$132 billion ($4 billion) compared with Tuesday's T$97 billion. The main TAIEX share index <.TWII> finished 89.31 points higher at 7,346.26, after posting its worst daily percentage drop in more than two weeks in the previous session. Turnover was thin at T$97 billion ($3 billion) compared with Monday's T$95 billion. Netbook pioneer Asustek was up 1.64 percent, pushing the computer and peripheral equipment sub-index <.TCPI> up 2.19 percent to a one-week high. Asustek Computer said on Monday it expects to ship 11-13 million portable PCs this year as demand increases in Europe and other markets. [ID:nTP126777] "Shares of Asustek rose as demand for portable PCs are seen rising in key markets, and other notebook PC makers share a similar view," said Angela Hsiang, an analyst at KGI Securities. Acer <2353.tw>, the world's No. 3 PC brand, jumped 3.38 percent. Hon Hai <2317.tw>, which assembles PCs for top U.S. brands, rose 2.45 percent. "Corporate demand is also expected to rise after the launch of Microsoft's Windows 7 operating system, and this could mean a boost in business for PC-related firms," said Hsiang. Financial shares <.TFNI> finished 1.01 percent higher, recouping losses from a bout of profit-taking in the previous session. Cathay Financial <2882.tw> climbed 0.95 percent. Investors ingored a media report that the signing a financial memorandum of understanding and a free trade-like agreement with China could be delayed. Capital Securities <6005.tw> rose 1.26 percent after Taiwan's seventh-largest broker said on Monday that it would acquire a financial firm as part of efforts to increase its book value, paving the way for more mergers. [ID:nTP127405] "The market is caught between investors unwillingness to buy as the TAIEX is hovering around a one-year high and reluctance to sell as the global economy is seen improving," said Tom Tang, a vice president at Masterlink Investment Advisory. ---------------------TAIEX IN PERSPECTIVE------------------ Move on day 1.23 pct Close on day 7,346.26 2009 intraday high 7,507.49 2009 intraday low 4,164.19 All-time high 12,682.41 12 FEB 1990 ------------------------------------------------------------- For a table of foreign trading in Taiwan stocks, double-click on [ID:nTP170358] (Reporting by Joan Hsu; Editing by Ken Wills) ((If you have a query or comment on this story, send an email to news.feedback.asia@thomsonreuters.com)) ASIA-PACIFIC STOCK MARKETS: Pan-Asia......[STXNEWS/AS] Japan........[.T] S.Korea....[.KS] S.E. 14:14 14Sep09 RTRS-Taiwan stocks post biggest loss in 2 wks; AU falls * Tech heavyweights fall on Q4 outlook woes * Mediatek shines on growing demand for smartphones * Financial shares down on profit-taking (Updates indexes, quotes) TAIPEI, Sept 14 (Reuters) - Taiwan stocks ended 1.09 percent lower on Monday, posting their worst single-day drop in two weeks, led by tech heavyweights such as AU Optronics <2409.tw> on concerns about their fourth-quarter outlook. The main TAIEX share index <.TWII> finished 80.19 points lower at 7,256.95, after posting a weekly gain of 2.56 percent last week to end at a 14-month high. AU Optronics, the world's No.3 flat panel maker and the most actively traded stock by volume, shed 3.81 percent, sending the optoelectronics sub-index <.TOPI> 2.28 percent lower. "AU Optronics could face oversupply as major Korean panel makers increase production," said John Chiu, a vice president at Fuh Hwa Securities Investment Trust. "A surprise fall in August sales reported by several technology companies also raised a red flag about fourth-quarter demand in the technology sector." TSMC <2330.tw>, the world's No.1 contract chip maker, fell 1.44 percent. It posted a decline in August sales last week. However, Mediatek <2454.tw>, the session's most active stock by turnover, rose 2 percent. Mediatek, Taiwan's top chip designer and supplier, rose amid optimism that the smartphone sector could see continued growth, helped by increasing demand from emerging markets such as China. [ID:nHKG374470]. Banking shares <.TFNI> ended 2.11 percent lower as investors locked in recent profits, ignoring a media report that a memorandum of understanding (MOU) on Taiwan and China opening their financial sectors to each other may be signed as early as October. [ID:nTP50296] "It's unlikely that financial shares will surge like they did last week, unless the governments of China and Taiwan take more concrete actions towards the financial MOU," Chiu said. Chinatrust Financial <2891.tw>, Taiwan's top credit card issuer, slipped 2.2 percent. Chunghwa Telecom <2412.tw> edged up 0.35 percent after a local newspaper report said that it had signed an agreement with China Unicom <0762.hk> to cut roaming charges by up to 50 percent when running on each other's networks. Tourism shares <.THOI> finished 0.41 percent higher, as the long holiday beginning Oct 1. in China is expected to warm up the island's tourism business, a local newspaper said. Turnover was thin at T$94 billion ($2.88 billion), lower than last week's daily average of T$136 billion. "If turnover continues to be thin, the main index could hover at around 7,200 points" for the near future, said Andrew Deng, an assistant vice president at Taiwan International Securities Corp. ---------------------TAIEX IN PERSPECTIVE------------------ Move on day -1.09 pct Close on day 7,256.95 2009 intraday high 7,507.49 2009 intraday low 4,164.19 All-time high 12,682.41 12 FEB 1990 -------------------------------------------------------------- (Reporting by Joan Hsu; Editing by Jonathan Hopfner) ((If you have a query or comment on this story, send an email to news.feedback.asia@thomsonreuters.com)) ASIA-PACIFIC STOCK MARKETS: Pan-Asia......[STXNEWS/AS] Japan........[.T] S.Korea....[.KS] S.E. 14:36 11Sep09 RTRS-Taiwan stocks inch up to 14-mth closing high on banks * TSMC, Hon Hai fall after worse-than-expected August sales * LCDs fall on news Korean peers could cut panel prices * Main index due for correction next week, analysts say (Updates indexes, quotes) By Joan Hsu TAIPEI, Sept 11 (Reuters) - Taiwan stocks inched up 0.07 percent to a fresh 14-month closing high on Friday, with TSMC <2330.tw> dragging tech shares lower after its weak August sales, but financials kept losses in check. The main TAIEX share index <.TWII> finished 5.06 points higher at 7.337.14, chalking up a fresh 14-month closing high and recording a 2.56 percent weekly gain. The technology sector <.TELI> was the session's top loser, falling 0.43 percent, with tech heavyweights TSMC <2330.tw> and Hon Hai <2317.tw> slipping 1.73 percent and 1.59 percent, respectively. "Technology shares have been major contributers to the main index's gains over the past two weeks, but investors are beginning to worry that perhaps they have become overvalued," said Alex Huang, a research director at Mega International Securities Co. The technology sector has gained more than 8 percent over the past two weeks. TSMC , the world's top contract chip maker, reported a 7 percent fall in August sales on Thursday, hitting the firm's shares on Friday. [ID:nTP182106] Turnover was light at T$97 billion ($3 billion), compared with Thursday's T$162 billion. The optoelectronics sub-index <.TOPI> also pressured the market, with LCD makers AU Optronics <2409.tw> and Chi Mei Optoelectronics <3009.tw> falling 1.94 percent and 1.81 percent, respectively. The falls came after a local newspaper reported that Taiwan flat panel makers could expect a slip in sales as their bigger South Korean peers cut panel prices. Helping balance losses in the tech sector were financial shares <.TFNI>, which gained 0.77 percent, with Chinatrust Financial <2891.tw> up 2.5 percent. "Foreign investors rushed in to buy financial shares on hopes of warmer ties with China," Huang said, referring to the $887 million net purchase by foreign institutions on Thursday, the sixth highest on record. [ID:nTP122059] Mega Financial <2886.tw> climbed 3.45 percent to its best finish in over a year on news that it was the first among Taiwan banks to obtain approval from the Chinese government to set up a representative office in China in six years. Analysts said Taiwan stocks could be due for a correction next week after recording gains of about 7 percent in the past two weeks. "Taiwan stocks have seen considerable gains in the past two weeks, and we could see some correction or profit taking in the early part of next week," said Mega's Huang, who expects the index to find support at about 7,200. ---------------------TAIEX IN PERSPECTIVE-------------------- Move on day 0.07 pct Close on day 7,337.14 2009 intraday high 7,507.49 2009 intraday low 4,164.19 All-time high 12,682.41 12 FEB 1990 -------------------------------------------------------------- For a table of foreign trading in Taiwan stocks, double-click on [ID:nTP170358] ((Reporting by Joan Hsu; Editing by Jonathan Hopfner)) ((If you have a query or comment on this story, send an email to news.feedback.asia@thomsonreuters.com)) ASIA-PACIFIC STOCK MARKETS: Pan-Asia......[STXNEWS/AS] Japan........[.T] S.Korea....[.KS] S.E. 17:23 10Sep09 RTRS-Taiwan dlr ends over 3-mth high after cabinet named * Market positive on potential China-Taiwan finance MOU * Central bank intervention and importer deals curb gains (Updates to close) TAIPEI, Sept 10 (Reuters) - The Taiwan dollar climbed sharply to more than a three-month closing high as investors bought the currency on a rally in Taiwan stocks, on prospects of a financial deal with China and a new cabinet named to ease criticism over a deadly typhoon. The Taiwan dollar closed at T$32.649, the strongest since June 5, after hitting a one-month intraday high at T$32.622 during the session. "The rally in the local currency was driven by a huge fund inflow to Taiwan stocks today, which surged on hopes of the imminent signing of a financial MOU with China," said a dealer in Taipei. On Thursday, foreign institutions bought a net T$28.9 billion ($887 million) worth of Taiwan stocks, marking their sixth-largest net purchase ever. [ID:nTP122059] The main TAIEX share index <.TWII> finished 1.12 percent higher at a 14-month high, with financial shares being the biggest contributors to the gain. But importer deals and central bank intervention weighed on the Taiwan dollar, dealers said. Importers have been keen to buy U.S. dollars at around T$32.650, pressuring the local currency, they said. Meanwhile, the central bank bought U.S. dollars throughout the session to keep the Taiwan dollar from strengthening further, said the dealer. The central bank preferred to keep the local currency relatively weak as part of efforts to help the island's exporters hurt by the global economic downturn. 0800 GMT WEDNESDAY CLOSE T$ (Taipei Forex Inc) 32.649 32.745 Volume in $ mln (Taipei Forex Inc) 1,080 1,032 T$ (Cosmos) 32.630 32.730 Six-month NDFs -0.500/-0.450 -0.510/-0.460 Note: Taipei Forex Inc is Taiwan's main forex exchange; Cosmos is a smaller exchange. 14:35 10Sep09 RTRS-Taiwan stocks hit 14-mth high as banks rally * Taiwan stocks hit 14-mth high after cabinet reshuffle * Bank shares rally on hopes of Taiwan-China MOU * TSMC advances before Aug sales report (Updates to close) TAIPEI, Sept 10 (Reuters) - Taiwan stocks rose 1.12 percent to a 14-month closing high on Thursday as financial shares rallied on hopes Taiwan will soon sign a financial services agreement with China, following a cabinet reshuffle. The main TAIEX share index <.TWII> ended 81.36 points higher at 7,332.08, the highest closing level since July 24, 2008, recovering from its worst single daily loss in two weeks in the previous session. The banking and insurance sub-index <.TFNI> was the second-biggest winner with a 3.38 percent jump. Chinatrust Financial <2891.tw> and Cathay Financial <2882.tw> were the most actively traded issues by volume and turnover, respectively. "Here we have a new cabinet which is keen to speed up the signing of the much anticipated MOU (memorandum of understanding). I think the market is reacting quite positively to the combination," said Eddy Chen, a vice president at National Investment Trust Co Ltd. Taiwan replaced 11 ministers, including the economic minister, in a cabinet reshuffle late on Wednesday prompted by criticism of the government's response to a deadly typhoon hast month. [ID:nTP50290] It said on Thursday it expected to sign a financial services agreement with China soon, but no timetable has been set and some tough issues issues remain reresolved. [ID:nTP279863] Turnover climbed to its highest level in more than a month, with T$162 billion ($5 billion) worth of shares changing hands, versus T$137 billion a day earlier. Chinatrust, which a source said over the weekend had outbid three rivals in buying AIG's Taiwan life insurance unit, rose 2.05 percent. [ID:nPEK111026] Fubon Financial, the island's first financial holding firm that has bought a stake of a Chinese lender, soared 5.4 percent to a 15-month high. Cathay Financial, Taiwan's top listed financial holding firm, ended up 3.5 percent. But some analysts warned that the gains in financial stocks could not sustain. "There was no significant development in terms of signing the MOU, and we know nothing more than we did a month ago," said Victor Tseng, an analyst at KGI Securities. The main board also got a lift from the semiconductor sub-index <.TSII>, which closed 1.47 percent higher. TSMC <2330.tw>, the world's largest contract chip maker, rose 2.42 percent. Minutes before the market close, TSMC posted a 7 percent decline in its August sales from a year ago. [ID:TPU001667] Other gainers included shares of notebook PC makers such as Acer <2353.tw>, which rose 2.39 percent, as the world's No.3 PC brand and HP are expected to gain from consumer demand in China, India and other resilient Asian markets. 14:19 09Sep09 RTRS-Taiwan stocks slip as technology shares weigh * HTC leads technology sector lower * UMC falls after stronger August sales * Medical-related shares up after more H1N1 deaths (Updates indexes and quotes) TAIPEI, Sept 9 (Reuters) - Taiwan stocks fell 0.87 percent on Wednesday, posting its worst daily drop in two weeks, as smartphone maker HTC Corp <2498.tw> led technology shares lower, following losses on regional markets such as China. The main TAIEX share index <.TWII> finished 63.27 points lower at 7,250.72, snapping an eight-session winning streak. Turnover fell to T$137 billion ($4.2 billion) from Tuesday's T$160 billion, the highest level in more than three months. "Taiwan stocks had climbed quite a bit over the past two weeks with help from technology shares, and it seems like they are going through a reasonable correction," said Tu Jin-lung, the chairman of Grand Cathay Investment Services. "The TAIEX also took a cue from major Asian markets such as China and Japan, which pulled back after a recent rally." Asian stocks drifted lower after initially hitting a one-year high on Wednesday, with investors taking a breather from moving money into riskier assets in the hope that the global recovery is strengthening. [ID:nSP90918] The technology sector <.TELI> had risen nearly 8.2 percent over the past two weeks, slightly more than the main index's 7.9 percent increase. Smartphone maker HTC, the session's most negative influence and the second most-active share by turnover, dropped 3.85 percent, sending the electronics sub-index 1.35 percent lower. HTC feared it could find itself in a weak position amid growing competition in the smartphone makers market. [ID:nTP334399] Shares of UMC <2303.tw> declined 0.93 percent after a research report by J.P Morgan said the world's No.2 contract chip maker could be expecting a decline in shipments in September. The contract chip maker logged its best monthly sales in nearly two years in August. [ID:nTP145252] Bucking the downward trend were medical-related shares <.TCHI>, such as China Chemical and Pharmaceutical <1701.tw>, which advanced 1.38 percent after the island's health authorities reported more H1N1-related deaths. Chinatrust Financial <2891.tw> was the most traded stock by volume, which finished 0.52 percent higher, after analysts said that its effort to acquire Nan Shan could help expand its platform to insurance. 14:20 08Sep09 RTRS-Taiwan stocks close at 1-yr high, exporters help * Tech shares gain on upbeat exports data * Premier's resignation has little impact on market * Construction stocks up on hopes of airport projects (Updates indexes and quotes) TAIPEI, Sept 8 (Reuters) - Taiwan stocks closed up 1.24 percent at their highest in over a year on Tuesday, as tech shares such as Hon Hai <2317.tw> rose after positive exports data and investors largely ignored the resignation of Taiwan's premier. "This so-called political earthquake did not shake the local stock market," Alan Tseng, a vice president of Capital Investment Trust said after Monday's surprise announcement that Premier Liu Chao-shiuan was stepping down in response to criticism over the government's response to a deadly typhoon last month. [ID:nSP494665] "Positive trade figures provided some confidence to the investors that the island's economy is recovering, while they hope that closer ties with China will speed up that process," Tseng said. After the close on Monday, Taiwan reported a snaller-than-expected fall in exports in August, largely due to an increasing demand from China. [ID:nTP338735] The main TAIEX share index <.TWII> rose for the eighth straight session, finishing up 89.40 points at 7,313.99, its highest close since Aug. 14, 2008. Turnover was moderate at T$159 billion ($4.8 billion), slightly more active than Monday's T$125 billion. The trade data boosted the tech-heavy index and prompted investors to buy technology shares such as Hon Hai <2317.tw>, which jumped 3.64 percent. LCD makers AU Optronics <2409.tw> and Chi Mei Optoelectronics <3009.tw> were among the top gainers, rising 3.03 and 1.5 percent, respectively. United Microelectronics Corp (UMC) <2303.tw> (UMC.N) recouped early losses to end up 0.94 percent. The world's No.2 contract chip maker will announce its monthly sales for August after the market close. Abu Dhabi's state-owned ATIC on Monday offered to buy Singapore rival Chartered Semiconductor , but analysts said the deal would not pose an imminent threat to TSMC <2330> and UMC, which control about two-thirds of the global chip foundry market. [ID:nTP91602] The construction sub-index <.TCOI> was the session's best performing sector, with real estate developer Farglory <5522.tw> rising by its 6.86 percent limit. The surge came after a research report by Morgan Stanley that construction shares could benefit from a development project in Taoyuan, as the newly appointed vice premier Eric Chu was keen to establish Taoyuan Airport City. Chinatrust Financial <2891.tw> declined 0.51 percent after it said it would raise more cash on top of a previously announced $1.34 billion private placement if its efforts to acquire AIG's Taiwan unit were successful. 14:35 07Sep09 RTRS-Taiwan stocks up for seventh session, led by UMC * UMC rises before monthly sales report on Tuesday * Compal continues advance after upbeat forecast * Chinatrust up on news it outbids rivals for AIG Taiwan unit (Updates indexes and quotes) TAIPEI, Sept 7 (Reuters) - Taiwan stocks closed up 1 percent on Monday, hovering at a more than one-year closing high, with contract chip makers such as UMC <2303.tw> leading gains on the prospect of increasing orders. The main TAIEX share index <.TWII> finished 71.46 points higher at 7,224.59, gaining for a seventh straight session and posting its strongest close since August 14, 2008. Turnover was thin at T$125 billion ($3.81 billion), compared with Friday's T$138 billion. UMC , the world's second largest contract chip maker and the session's most active share by volume, surged 4.92 percent ahead of its August sales report on Tuesday. The semiconductor sub-index <.TSII> rose 1.55 percent. "Contract chip makers could be looking at a very busy quarter as the current quarter is usually the busiest time of the year," said John Chiu, a vice president at Fuh Hwa Securities Investment Trust. Shares of UMC's bigger rival TSMC <2330.tw>, the world's top contract chip maker, rose 3.33 percent. Further boosting sentiment was an offer by Abu Dhabi's state fund ATIC to buy Singapore's Chartered Semiconductor , raising expectations that further consolidation of the global chip sector is imminent. [ID:nT37096] Shares of DRAM chipmakers such as Powerchip <5346.two> and ProMOS <5387.two> also added points to the main board, rising 6.77 percent and 6.2 percent, respectively. "DRAM makers' shares rose on expectation of a boost in demand from the Chinese market and a hike in chip prices," Chiu said. Other tech gainers included contract laptop PC maker Compal Electronics <2324.tw>, which climbed 1.63 percent to lead the broader computer and peripherals sub-index <.TCPI> 0.47 percent higher. Compal Electronics expects shipments in the current three months to climb 20 percent from the second quarter, underscoring a return in consumer and corporate tech spending. []ID:nTP326653] Other gainers included banking and insurance shares <.TFNI>, which advanced 2.07 percent. "Financials and other China-sensitive shares are catching up with gains on the overall market," added Chiu. "Investors have been avoiding financial shares for weeks." Shares of Chinatrust Financial <2891.tw>, Taiwan's top credit card issuer, rose 1.04 percent. It offered $2.4 billion for AIG's Taiwan Nan Shan Life unit, outbidding rivals, a source said on Saturday. 14:27 04Sep09 RTRS-Taiwan stocks end at over 1-yr high on Compal, HTC * Compal up on prospect of higher Q3 shipments * HTC climbs to 1-mth high on Sprint Nextel deal * UMC gains on reports of higher profit margin in Q3 (Updates closing prices, quotes) TAIPEI, Sept 4 (Reuters) - Taiwan stocks ended up 0.68 percent on Friday at their highest close in more than a year, as technology shares such as Compal Electronics <2324.tw> rallied on expectations of stronger sales in the third quarter. The main TAIEX share index <.TWII> finished 48.48 points higher at 7,153.13, its highest close since Aug. 15, 2008. Turnover was T$137 billion ($4.2 billion), lower than Thursday's T$138 billion but more than last week's daily average of T$89 billion. "Despite a slew of economic data at home and in the United States indicating a global economic turnaround, investors are still looking for reaffirmation, and the outlook provided by the technology companies fit the bill," said Charles Shen, the president of Taishin Investment Trust Co. Compal Electronics, the world's No. 2 contract laptop PC maker, surged 6.8 percent to a 16-month high, after analysts told Reuters the firm is expecting strong shipment growth in the current quarter.[ID:nTP315335] The computer and peripheral equipment sub-index <.TCPI> rose 1.81 percent. Compal's gain was further boosted by a newspaper report that it plans to increase investment in China. The company will hold it second-quarter investor conference later on Friday. Smartphone maker HTC <2498.tw>, the session's most actively traded stock, finished 5.92 percent up at an one-month high, after U.S telecom operator Sprint Nextel said it plans to sell the firm's Hero cellphone. [ID:nTP314736] "Taiwan is home to many of the world's top laptop PC makers and electronics parts manufacturers, and the main index is expected to benefit from their gains and climb higher within the next few months," Shen said. "But we'll need more good news from China if the TAIEX is to make a breakthrough." There has been little progress on a much-anticipated FTA-like agreement with China, known as the Economic Cooperation Framework Agreement, deemed crucial to Taiwan's global economic competitiveness. Taiwan stocks have gained more than 56 percent since the begining of this year, largely due to stronger trade ties with China. United Microelectronics Corp <2303.tw>, the world's second largest contract chip maker and the session's most active share by volume, shot up 5.17 percent after a newspaper reported that its third-quarter profit margin could reach a near two-year high. Another bright spot was Mediatek <2454.tw>, Taiwan's top chip designer and supplier, which climbed 2.32 percent after a local newspaper reported Mediatek's chips would be used in Vodafone 's two new cellphone models. China Steel <2002.tw>, Taiwan's top steel maker, dropped 0.5 percent, underperforming the steel and iron sub-index's <.TSTI> 0.71 percent fall. Its shares fell even after it raised domestic product prices by 8.6 percent in October-November from September as demand picked up. [ID:nTP367512] Automobile makers <.TAUI> were the session's top losers, with Yulon Motor <2201.tw> down 2.78 percent after a rally in the previous session. ---------------------TAIEX IN PERSPECTIVE------------------ Move on day 0.68 pct Close on day 7,153.13 2009 intraday high 7,185.52 2009 intraday low 4,164.19 All-time high 12,682.41 12 FEB 1990 -------------------------------------------------------------- For a table of foreign trading in Taiwan stocks, double-click on [ID:nTP170358] ((Reporting by Joan Hsu; Editing by Jonathan Hopfner)) ((If you have a query or comment on this story, send an email to news.feedback.asia@thomsonreuters.com)) ASIA-PACIFIC STOCK MARKETS: Pan-Asia......[STXNEWS/AS] Japan........[.T] S.Korea....[.KS] S.E.
