14:20 08Sep09 RTRS-Taiwan stocks close at 1-yr high, exporters help * Tech shares gain on upbeat exports data * Premier's resignation has little impact on market * Construction stocks up on hopes of airport projects (Updates indexes and quotes) TAIPEI, Sept 8 (Reuters) - Taiwan stocks closed up 1.24 percent at their highest in over a year on Tuesday, as tech shares such as Hon Hai <2317.tw> rose after positive exports data and investors largely ignored the resignation of Taiwan's premier. "This so-called political earthquake did not shake the local stock market," Alan Tseng, a vice president of Capital Investment Trust said after Monday's surprise announcement that Premier Liu Chao-shiuan was stepping down in response to criticism over the government's response to a deadly typhoon last month. [ID:nSP494665] "Positive trade figures provided some confidence to the investors that the island's economy is recovering, while they hope that closer ties with China will speed up that process," Tseng said. After the close on Monday, Taiwan reported a snaller-than-expected fall in exports in August, largely due to an increasing demand from China. [ID:nTP338735] The main TAIEX share index <.TWII> rose for the eighth straight session, finishing up 89.40 points at 7,313.99, its highest close since Aug. 14, 2008. Turnover was moderate at T$159 billion ($4.8 billion), slightly more active than Monday's T$125 billion. The trade data boosted the tech-heavy index and prompted investors to buy technology shares such as Hon Hai <2317.tw>, which jumped 3.64 percent. LCD makers AU Optronics <2409.tw> and Chi Mei Optoelectronics <3009.tw> were among the top gainers, rising 3.03 and 1.5 percent, respectively. United Microelectronics Corp (UMC) <2303.tw> (UMC.N) recouped early losses to end up 0.94 percent. The world's No.2 contract chip maker will announce its monthly sales for August after the market close. Abu Dhabi's state-owned ATIC on Monday offered to buy Singapore rival Chartered Semiconductor , but analysts said the deal would not pose an imminent threat to TSMC <2330> and UMC, which control about two-thirds of the global chip foundry market. [ID:nTP91602] The construction sub-index <.TCOI> was the session's best performing sector, with real estate developer Farglory <5522.tw> rising by its 6.86 percent limit. The surge came after a research report by Morgan Stanley that construction shares could benefit from a development project in Taoyuan, as the newly appointed vice premier Eric Chu was keen to establish Taoyuan Airport City. Chinatrust Financial <2891.tw> declined 0.51 percent after it said it would raise more cash on top of a previously announced $1.34 billion private placement if its efforts to acquire AIG's Taiwan unit were successful.
