The main TAIEX share index <.TWII> finished 71.46 points higher at 7,224.59, gaining for a seventh straight session and posting its strongest close since August 14, 2008. Turnover was thin at T$125 billion ($3.81 billion), compared with Friday's T$138 billion. UMC , the world's second largest contract chip maker and the session's most active share by volume, surged 4.92 percent ahead of its August sales report on Tuesday. The semiconductor sub-index <.TSII> rose 1.55 percent. "Contract chip makers could be looking at a very busy quarter as the current quarter is usually the busiest time of the year," said John Chiu, a vice president at Fuh Hwa Securities Investment Trust. Shares of UMC's bigger rival TSMC <2330.tw>, the world's top contract chip maker, rose 3.33 percent. Further boosting sentiment was an offer by Abu Dhabi's state fund ATIC to buy Singapore's Chartered Semiconductor , raising expectations that further consolidation of the global chip sector is imminent. [ID:nT37096] Shares of DRAM chipmakers such as Powerchip <5346.two> and ProMOS <5387.two> also added points to the main board, rising 6.77 percent and 6.2 percent, respectively. "DRAM makers' shares rose on expectation of a boost in demand from the Chinese market and a hike in chip prices," Chiu said. Other tech gainers included contract laptop PC maker Compal Electronics <2324.tw>, which climbed 1.63 percent to lead the broader computer and peripherals sub-index <.TCPI> 0.47 percent higher. Compal Electronics expects shipments in the current three months to climb 20 percent from the second quarter, underscoring a return in consumer and corporate tech spending. []ID:nTP326653] Other gainers included banking and insurance shares <.TFNI>, which advanced 2.07 percent. "Financials and other China-sensitive shares are catching up with gains on the overall market," added Chiu. "Investors have been avoiding financial shares for weeks."
