14:45 01Sep09 RTRS-Taiwan stocks at 2-wk closing high;Hon Hai surges * Hon Hai jumps on stronger-than-expected Q2 profit * Worries ease as China fine-tunes protest in Dalai Lama row * Evergreen Marine down after posting losses (Updates quotes; Adds hot stocks, details) TAIPEI, Sept 1 (Reuters) - Taiwan stocks rose 2.84 percent, chalking up their best daily percent gain in over two months to end at a two-week closing high on Tuesday, led by tech heavyweights such as Hon Hai after its solid quarterly earnings. The main share index <.TWII> finished 193.8 points higher at 7,019.75, logging its strongest close since Aug. 14 and best single-day percentage rise since June 24. Turnover was more active at T$139 billion ($4.2 billion) compared with Monday's T$86 billion. Investor concerns were eased after the Chinese government fine-tuned its protest against Taiwan for hosting the Dalai Lama, the Tibetan spiritual leader Beijing brands a separatist. [ID:nTP61651] "Investors bought technology shares under a backdrop of relatively strong profits and increased demand in computing devices," said John Chu, a vice president at Fuh Hwa Securities Investment Trust. "They also felt more comfortable putting money into the market after Chinese stocks firmed today and as they sensed the Chinese government was unwilling to damage fast-improving cross-straits relations." Electronics parts giant Hon Hai <2317.tw> was the most actively traded issue by turnover, going limit up. The electronics sub-index <.TELI> jumped 3.49 percent, outperforming the main board. Hon Hai, the world's largest electronics parts maker, reported a net profit of T$15.03 billion in the April-June period on Monday, beating market expectations, amid improving global demand. [ID:nTP3024] Mediatek <2454.tw>, the second-most active share by turnover, was also limit up after a local newspaper reported that the top chip designer and supplier posted upbeat half-year results and Morgan Stanley raised its target price on Mediatek stocks. Financial shares <.TFNI> closed up 3.22 percent, with the island's top listed financial holding firm, Cathay Financial <2882.tw>, rising 4.13 percent. JPMorgan told Reuters at the China Investment Summit that Chinese banks are expected to seek investment opportunities in Taiwan.
