14:54 15Sep09 RTRS-CORRECTED-Taiwan stocks end higher, PC makers lead gains (Corrects to 14-month from 13-month in lead para) * Notebook PC makers gain on hopes of growing demand * Capital Securities up on news of acquisition (Updates indexes and quotes) TAIPEI, Sept 15 (Reuters) - Taiwan stocks rose 1.23 percent on Tuesday, hovering at a 14-month closing high, with PC makers such as Asustek <2357.tw> lifted by investor hopes of growing demand for portable PCs. The main TAIEX share index <.TWII> finished 89.31 points higher at 7,346.26, after posting its worst daily percentage drop in more than two weeks in the previous session. Turnover was thin at T$97 billion ($3 billion) compared with Monday's T$95 billion. Netbook pioneer Asustek was up 1.64 percent, pushing the computer and peripheral equipment sub-index <.TCPI> up 2.19 percent to a one-week high. Asustek Computer said on Monday it expects to ship 11-13 million portable PCs this year as demand increases in Europe and other markets. [ID:nTP126777] "Shares of Asustek rose as demand for portable PCs are seen rising in key markets, and other notebook PC makers share a similar view," said Angela Hsiang, an analyst at KGI Securities. Acer <2353.tw>, the world's No. 3 PC brand, jumped 3.38 percent. Hon Hai <2317.tw>, which assembles PCs for top U.S. brands, rose 2.45 percent. "Corporate demand is also expected to rise after the launch of Microsoft's Windows 7 operating system, and this could mean a boost in business for PC-related firms," said Hsiang. Financial shares <.TFNI> finished 1.01 percent higher, recouping losses from a bout of profit-taking in the previous session. Cathay Financial <2882.tw> climbed 0.95 percent. Investors ingored a media report that the signing a financial memorandum of understanding and a free trade-like agreement with China could be delayed. Capital Securities <6005.tw> rose 1.26 percent after Taiwan's seventh-largest broker said on Monday that it would acquire a financial firm as part of efforts to increase its book value, paving the way for more mergers.
