14:19 09Sep09 RTRS-Taiwan stocks slip as technology shares weigh * HTC leads technology sector lower * UMC falls after stronger August sales * Medical-related shares up after more H1N1 deaths (Updates indexes and quotes) TAIPEI, Sept 9 (Reuters) - Taiwan stocks fell 0.87 percent on Wednesday, posting its worst daily drop in two weeks, as smartphone maker HTC Corp <2498.tw> led technology shares lower, following losses on regional markets such as China. The main TAIEX share index <.TWII> finished 63.27 points lower at 7,250.72, snapping an eight-session winning streak. Turnover fell to T$137 billion ($4.2 billion) from Tuesday's T$160 billion, the highest level in more than three months. "Taiwan stocks had climbed quite a bit over the past two weeks with help from technology shares, and it seems like they are going through a reasonable correction," said Tu Jin-lung, the chairman of Grand Cathay Investment Services. "The TAIEX also took a cue from major Asian markets such as China and Japan, which pulled back after a recent rally." Asian stocks drifted lower after initially hitting a one-year high on Wednesday, with investors taking a breather from moving money into riskier assets in the hope that the global recovery is strengthening. [ID:nSP90918] The technology sector <.TELI> had risen nearly 8.2 percent over the past two weeks, slightly more than the main index's 7.9 percent increase. Smartphone maker HTC, the session's most negative influence and the second most-active share by turnover, dropped 3.85 percent, sending the electronics sub-index 1.35 percent lower. HTC feared it could find itself in a weak position amid growing competition in the smartphone makers market. [ID:nTP334399] Shares of UMC <2303.tw> declined 0.93 percent after a research report by J.P Morgan said the world's No.2 contract chip maker could be expecting a decline in shipments in September. The contract chip maker logged its best monthly sales in nearly two years in August. [ID:nTP145252] Bucking the downward trend were medical-related shares <.TCHI>, such as China Chemical and Pharmaceutical <1701.tw>, which advanced 1.38 percent after the island's health authorities reported more H1N1-related deaths. Chinatrust Financial <2891.tw> was the most traded stock by volume, which finished 0.52 percent higher, after analysts said that its effort to acquire Nan Shan could help expand its platform to insurance.
